Department of Democracy emphasizes inclusive outreach, respectful dialogue, and accurate information-sharing. Team members collaborate to support voter education, community organizing, and advocacy efforts that are accessible and welcoming to all.

Role Description The Canvasser role is a contract, on-site position based in Indianapolis, IN. Canvassers engage with community members face-to-face, share clear and accurate information about civic initiatives, and encourage participation in democratic processes. Day-to-day responsibilities include visiting assigned neighborhoods or locations, initiating conversations, answering questions, collecting feedback, and accurately recording data from interactions. The role also involves following outreach scripts and guidelines, attending briefings or trainings, and reporting progress and challenges to supervisors. Canvassers are expected to represent the Department of Democracy professionally, maintain confidentiality where required, and contribute to a respectful, inclusive environment during all outreach activities.

Qualifications

  • Strong canvassing skills, including door-to-door outreach and in-person engagement.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with diverse community members.
  • Clear, confident communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Customer service experience or skills in handling questions, concerns, and feedback respectfully.
  • Ability to participate in and apply training, including use of scripts, talking points, and data collection tools.
  • Comfort working outdoors and on foot for extended periods, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Reliable transportation to canvassing locations in Indianapolis, IN.
