Job description

ASRC Federal Field Services, a Subsidiary of ASRC Federal Holding Company, is currently seeking a Part-time Marine Master at the Plum Island Animal Disease Research Center, located on Plum Island, NY. (1.5 nautical miles off North Fork of Long Island & 6 nautical miles off coast of Old Saybrook, CT).  Marine transportation furnished by Government provided ferry.

Key Role:

  • Commands and supervises the operations of Government-furnished ferry within domestic waterways
  • Coordinates and assigns work tasks and coordinates operational logistical schedules
  • Facilitates, assists, and participates in USCG inspections and compliance audits, and ensures all USCG and other regulatory compliance documentation requirements are upheld
  • Supervises the work of crew members
  • Determines course and speed; maneuvers to avoid hazards; and continuously monitors the vessel’s position using charts and navigational aids
  • Oversees the overall safety of passengers and freight
  • Operates marine vessel to transport passengers, freight, cargo, and livestock
  • Direct and oversees crew members who steer the vessel, assist with navigation, operates engines, communicates with vessels, performs preventive maintenance, handles lines, and loads cargo and freight
  • Ensure proper procedures and safety practices are followed
  • Ensures machinery and equipment are in good working order and oversee the loading and discharging of cargo or passengers
  • Maintains logs and other records tracking the ship’s movements, efforts at controlling pollution, and tracking cargo/passengers records
  • Performs routine preventative and corrective maintenance and/or ensures completion of tasks by crew members
  • Performs other duties as determined and assigned by the Department Manager
  • Shift begins and ends in New York

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, 5-7 years.
  • USCG Merchant Mariners Master License 100 Gross
  • FCC Marine Radio Operator

Additional Qualifications:

  • USCG Radar Observer obtained within 90 days of hire
  • Advances Shipboard Firefighter Certification within the 1st year
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Physical Requirements:

  • Perform physical activities that require considerable use of your whole body.
  • Utilization of appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) such as safety shoes, hard hats, hearing, and eye protection is required. Ability to climb ladders, reach overhead and lift to 50lbs. Industrial work environment that may include loud noise, heat stress, work indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to carry out housekeeping duties with minimal direction, following prescribed methods & directives.
  • You must be physically able to move freely in environments that are restricted in space, unsteady or otherwise not easily accessible. Ability to climb ladders, and lift to 50 lbs.
