Job description

Performs advanced fire and explosion investigation work in the Fire Investigation Unit of Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. Responsible for conducting complex origin and cause investigations employing all elements of the scientific method per National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 921, as well as criminal investigations of fire and explosion incidents. Conducts fire scene examinations to determine the area or point of origin, source of ignition, and material(s) ignited; secures the fire scene; conducts; exterior and interior surveys to identify and interpret fire patterns; examines and removes fire debris; reconstructs the area of origin; documents the fire scene; locates and preserves evidence; conducts interviews; formulates an opinion as to origin/cause/or responsibility, and prepares a written report of findings. Required to be deputized as a Reserve Deputy by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) in order to investigate, pursue, apprehend, and arrest persons for committing the crime of arson. Reports are reviewed by an administrative superior for completeness and accuracy. The Fire Investigation Unit provides coverage seven (7) days a week and 24 hours a day, including on-call scheduling.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires qualified applicants to possess one of the following:
โ€ข An Associate's Degree or 60 credit hours in Fire Science, Fire Protection Technology, Law Enforcement, or closely related field; minimum of four (4) years of experience in one (1) of the following: Florida Certified Law Enforcement Officer or equivalent recognized certification; Certification as a Fire Investigator; Certification as a Florida Firefighter,
OR
โ€ข Graduation from high school or an equivalent; minimum of six (6) years in one (1) of the following: Florida certified Law Enforcement Officer or equivalent; Certification as a Fire Investigator; Certification as a Florida Firefighter.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
The selected candidate for this position MUST:
โ€ข Possess a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification
โ€ข Complete the Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Fire Investigator Task Book within 11 months of hire
โ€ข Complete the Florida Fire Safety Inspector I Certification within 18 months of hire
โ€ข Must be deputized by PBSO within 11 months of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred qualifications include:
โ€ข Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or Fire Science Technology,
โ€ข Current certification as a Florida Law Enforcement Officer,
โ€ข Bi/trilingual (English/Spanish/Creole).
