Job description

Arcata is a technical services company supporting our nation's defense and maintaining our country's leadership in science, aeronautics, and space. Our greatest strength is our people. Located on the white sandy beaches of the Andros Island, a Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Atlantic Undersea Test & Evaluation Center (AUTEC) is Arcata's newest partnership. AUTEC provides research, development, test and evaluation, engineering, analysis, and assessment, and fleet support capabilities for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, and offensive and defensive undersea weapon systems, and stewards existing and emerging technologies in support of undersea warfare for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport.

Position Summary:

  • The Harbor Master monitors vessel traffic in the area and coordinate harbor entrance/exit.

  • Schedule is 7 days on - 7 days off (12-hour shifts)

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Issue Sailing Orders to all departing AUTEC vessels and assist when those vessels depart and return to the pier area Marine Department.
  • Lift and throw mooring lines for incoming and outgoing vessels.
  • Secure vessels at multiple locations, multiple times per shift.
  • Communicate regularly via phone, VHF radio and in person with employees, crew members, Navy personnel, and contractors.
  • Make engine room and vessel checks on all in port vessels after hours and on weekends. These checks will include embarking on the vessel and climbing up and down the vessels stairwells to perform these checks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of job-related experience.
  • Working knowledge of all vessel movement and marine area activities.
  • Must be a U.S citizen.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for this Position:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to communicate via phone and VHF radio.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must possess a valid US passport booklet
  • Able to obtain and maintain a Government Secret Security Clearance.
  • Must be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to reside in remote location with limited medical facilities.
  • Must be US Citizen

Work Environment, Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Must be able to lift heavy ship mooring lines up to 50 lbs. and secure them to the dock bollards.
  • Must be able to walk up and down steep stairwells on a ship.
  • Must be able to walk long distances to multiple mooring positions throughout the marine department area.
  • Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks at the same time and remain calm under pressure.
  • Must be willing to perform all tasks described here in all different weather conditions and at all hours of the day and night
