Job description

Job Description
Functional Data Scientist (AI Decision Systems)
Pay Range: $85/hour to $100/hour
Job Summary
We are seeking a Functional Data Scientist to drive data-informed decision-making within AI systems. This role bridges business context, data analysis, and AI logic to improve how models interpret information and generate outcomes. The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, experience in the education sector, and the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights that enhance AI-driven decisions.
This is not a purely technical modeling role. Instead, it focuses on data interpretation, decision frameworks, and cross-functional collaboration to improve AI system performance.
Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze structured and unstructured datasets to identify trends, patterns, and key drivers of outcomes
  • Translate business and educational objectives into data-driven decision frameworks for AI systems
  • Partner with data scientists, engineers, and product teams to guide how AI models interpret and prioritize data inputs
  • Identify gaps in existing datasets and recommend additional internal and external data sources
  • Evaluate and integrate third-party data to improve predictive accuracy and decision quality
  • Develop hypotheses and validate insights using data analysis techniques
  • Communicate insights, recommendations, and findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Continuously refine decision logic based on new data, feedback loops, and performance outcomes
Core Competencies
  • Data Analysis and Interpretation
  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
  • Business Intelligence and Decision Frameworks
  • AI/ML Collaboration (Non-Modeling Focus)
  • Stakeholder Communication and Data Storytelling
  • Data Gap Analysis and Data Strategy
Required Qualifications
  • Experience in the education industry (EdTech, K-12, higher education, learning platforms, or education data systems)
  • 3+ years of experience in data analysis, business analytics, or data-driven decision-making roles
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex datasets and generate actionable insights
  • Experience translating ambiguous business problems into structured, data-driven approaches
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with technical teams (data scientists, engineers) and business stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present data insights clearly
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with AI/ML-driven products, recommendation systems, or decision engines
  • Familiarity with data tools such as SQL, Python, or BI platforms (Tableau, Power BI, Looker)
  • Experience sourcing, evaluating, and integrating external datasets
  • Understanding of predictive analytics, data modeling concepts, or experimentation frameworks
  • Strong storytelling skills with data visualization and reporting
What Success Looks Like
  • Consistently identifies high-impact insights from complex datasets
  • Proactively uncovers data gaps and recommends meaningful improvements
  • Incorporates internal and external data to strengthen decision-making
  • Improves the quality and accuracy of AI-driven decisions over time
  • Effectively influences stakeholders with clear, data-backed recommendations
