Datacenter Operations Manager information

What are some common challenges faced by Datacenter Operations Managers, and how can they be addressed?

Datacenter Operations Managers often encounter challenges such as maintaining uptime during equipment failures, managing rapid scaling demands, and ensuring robust security protocols. To address these, managers typically implement detailed incident response plans, invest in staff cross-training, and coordinate closely with IT and security teams. Proactive monitoring, regular maintenance schedules, and clear communication channels are also essential for minimizing downtime and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

What is the difference between Datacenter Operations Manager vs Data Center Technician?

AspectDatacenter Operations ManagerData Center Technician
CredentialsTypically requires management experience, certifications like Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Server+Often requires technical certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or vendor-specific training
Work EnvironmentOversees data center operations, manages teams, plans infrastructure upgradesPerforms hardware installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance tasks
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by data center and IT service providers for operational oversightCommonly employed in data centers, telecom, and enterprise IT facilities for technical support

The Datacenter Operations Manager focuses on overseeing overall data center operations, managing teams, and strategic planning. In contrast, the Data Center Technician handles hands-on technical tasks like hardware setup and troubleshooting. Both roles are essential but differ in scope and responsibilities within the data center environment.

What does a Datacenter Operations Manager do?

A Datacenter Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and maintenance of data center facilities. This includes ensuring the reliability, security, and efficiency of all hardware, software, and network systems within the data center. They manage staff, coordinate with other IT teams, handle incident response, and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. Their role is crucial for minimizing downtime, optimizing performance, and supporting the business's IT infrastructure needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Datacenter Operations Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Datacenter Operations Manager, you need a strong background in IT infrastructure, systems administration, and facility management, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with data center management tools, monitoring systems, and certifications such as ITIL or Data Center Certified Associate (DCCA) is commonly required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are crucial for managing teams, coordinating with stakeholders, and ensuring operational continuity. These competencies are vital for maintaining uptime, optimizing performance, and safeguarding critical business data and services.

WHAT YOU DO AT AMD CHANGES EVERYTHING

At AMD, our mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences—from AI and data centers, to PCs, gaming and embedded systems. Grounded in a culture of innovation and collaboration, we believe real progress comes from bold ideas, human ingenuity and a shared passion to create something extraordinary. When you join AMD, you’ll discover the real differentiator is our culture. We push the limits of innovation to solve the world’s most important challenges—striving for execution excellence, while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives. Join us as we shape the future of AI and beyond.  Together, we advance your career.

THE ROLE:

AMD is seeking a Product Development Engineer, Product Operations to join our Datacenter Platform Engineering Group. In this role, you will drive the development and manufacturing launch of cutting-edge datacenter hardware (server and rack systems). You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure new products meet design standards, quality targets, and production timelines.

This is a high-impact role offering the opportunity to be at the forefront of datacenter hardware innovation. If you are detail-oriented, quality-focused, and excited about coordinating complex technical projects from design through production, we encourage you to apply and join our team at AMD’s Datacenter Platform Engineering Group!

THE PERSON:

This position is ideal for an engineer with a strong background in product development, manufacturing processes, and cross-team project coordination, who is eager to take a visible role in launching high-quality datacenter products. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, quality-focused, and excited about coordinating complex technical projects from design through production.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:Work closely with diverse teams (Engineering Design, Materials, Rack/Server Systems Program Management, etc.) to align design, materials planning, manufacturing, and quality efforts throughout the product development lifecycle.

  • Design & DFM Reviews:Review design specifications, CAD drawings, and documentation to ensure compliance with design criteria, industry standards, and manufacturing capabilities. Lead Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews to ensure products are optimized for efficient, high-quality production.

  • Project Scheduling & Readiness:Develop and maintain project schedules and implementation readiness timelines to support on-time new product introductions. Communicate project status and readiness milestones to customer program management teams and internal stakeholders.

  • New Product Introduction (NPI) Leadership:Drive NPI processes by facilitating and leading cross-functional problem-solving meetings with Design, Manufacturing, Test, and Quality Engineering teams. Proactively identify and resolve any design or production issues, ensuring smooth product launch and ramp-up.

  • Technical Design Reviews:Establish and lead regular development review meetings to deepen technical understanding and coordinate design changes. Provide guidance and feedback during design reviews, ensuring feasibility and alignment with manufacturing processes and capabilities.

  • Prototype & First Article Oversight:Oversee first article builds and First Article Inspections (FAI) for new products. Document FAI requirements, analyze initial build results, and implement improvements to validate product design and manufacturing readiness.

  • Production Support & Change Management:Coordinate engineering rework and change orders during the transition to volume production. Manage Engineering Change Order (ECO) processes effectively to incorporate design updates or fixes, minimizing impact on production schedules.

  • Assembly Process Validation:Validate and approve production assembly instructions (including labeling and work instructions) to ensure clarity and accuracy for manufacturing teams. Make sure assembly processes are properly documented and optimized for quality and efficiency.

  • Quality & Delivery Assurance:Ensure that final products meet all customer specifications and quality standards. Work closely with quality and production teams to confirm products are built correctly and delivered on schedule, fostering smooth ramp-up of new server and rack systems into high-volume production.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Hands-on experience guiding products from concept through development and production.

  • Knowledge of physical design (PD) methodologies for hardware or systems.

  • Familiarity with server architectures or rack-level hardware systems and their components.

  • Ability to conduct Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews and optimize designs for efficient manufacturing.

  • Experience managing Engineering Change Order (ECO) processes and implementing design updates in a production environment.

  • Understanding of printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) manufacturing processes and best practices.

  • Strong documentation skills, including experience creating and maintaining comprehensive engineering documentation and Bill of Materials (BOM).

  • Proven ability to interpret and review engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications to ensure design accuracy and manufacturability.

  • Hands-on experience working in a manufacturing or factory environment, especially in a fast-paced, dynamic NPI setting, with a history of successfully launching new hardware products.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Demonstrated ability to lead meetings, coordinate across multiple teams, and drive projects to completion in a timely manner.

  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant industry experience in product development engineering or a closely related hardware engineering role, including work with design and manufacturing processes for complex hardware products (datacenter, servers, or similar).

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field required. Master's degree in a relevant engineering field (e.g., Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering) preferred.
