What is the difference between Databricks Architect vs Data Engineer?

AspectDatabricks ArchitectData Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning and implementing data solutions on Databricks platformBuilding, maintaining, and optimizing data pipelines and infrastructure
Skills & CertificationsDatabricks certifications, Spark, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), SQLSQL, ETL tools, cloud platforms, programming (Python, Scala)
Work EnvironmentData platforms, cloud environments, collaboration with data teamsData pipelines, databases, cloud infrastructure, scripting

While both roles work with data and cloud platforms, a Databricks Architect primarily focuses on designing and implementing data solutions using Databricks, whereas a Data Engineer builds and maintains the data pipelines and infrastructure that support these solutions. The Architect often oversees the technical design, while the Engineer handles the day-to-day pipeline development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Databricks Architect?

To thrive as a Databricks Architect, you need strong expertise in big data engineering, cloud platforms (such as Azure or AWS), distributed computing, and proficiency in languages like Python or Scala, typically supported by a relevant degree and cloud certifications. Familiarity with Databricks Workspace, Apache Spark, Delta Lake, and CI/CD tools is crucial for designing and implementing scalable data solutions. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills set top performers apart by enabling effective collaboration and solution delivery. These competencies are essential for architecting reliable, high-performance data platforms that drive business insights and innovation.

What are some common challenges Databricks Architects face when designing large-scale data solutions?

Databricks Architects often encounter challenges such as optimizing cluster performance for cost and efficiency, ensuring data security and compliance across distributed environments, and integrating Databricks with legacy systems or diverse data sources. They must carefully design data pipelines and workflows to handle large volumes of data without bottlenecks, and also collaborate closely with data engineers, data scientists, and IT teams to align on best practices. Staying updated with evolving Databricks features and cloud platform updates is also essential for success in this dynamic role.

What is a Databricks Architect?

A Databricks Architect is an IT professional who designs, implements, and manages data solutions using the Databricks platform, which is built on Apache Spark. They are responsible for creating scalable data pipelines, optimizing data workflows, and ensuring security and compliance within the cloud environment. Databricks Architects often work closely with data engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders to deliver robust analytics solutions that drive business insights. Their expertise helps organizations leverage big data technologies efficiently and effectively.

Job description

McKesson is an impact-driven, Fortune 10 company that touches virtually every aspect of healthcare. We are known for delivering insights, products, and services that make quality care more accessible and affordable. Here, we focus on the health, happiness, and well-being of you and those we serve - we care.
What you do at McKesson matters. We foster a culture where you can grow, make an impact, and are empowered to bring new ideas. Together, we thrive as we shape the future of health for patients, our communities, and our people. If you want to be part of tomorrow's health today, we want to hear from you.
CoverMyMeds' Data & Analytics organization is seeking a Data Architect (Databricks) to define and scale our enterprise data platform strategy on Azure. This role will architect, standardize, and accelerate adoption of a modern Databricks lakehouse platform across the organization. You will partner closely with engineering, analytics, governance, and business teams to deliver scalable, secure, and high-performing data solutions that enable critical healthcare outcomes. This is a hands-on architecture role where you will both design platform strategy and actively contribute to implementation.
• Why this role matters: Our team is early in its Databricks maturity journey, and this hire will establish foundational standards, processes, and scaling capabilities across the platform.
* Our preferred candidate would reside in the Columbus, OH area to support a hybrid work schedule, but we may consider a well-qualified full-remote candidate.
* McKesson complies with all applicable U.S. immigration laws and regulations. The Company does not provide employer support or sponsorship for any immigration related employment benefit for this role.
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a fulltime basis without the need for employer support or sponsorship now or in the future. This includes having the legal right to work in the United States without the need for McKesson support or sponsorship for any immigration related employment authorization (e.g., H1B, O1, E3, H1B1, TN, F1 OPT, F1 STEM OPT, F1 CPT, etc.) now or in the future. If you will require McKesson to provide immigration support or sponsorship now or in the future, you should not apply for this position.
What You'll Do:
  • Own end-to-end architecture for the Databricks-on-Azure lakehouse platform, including workspace design, Unity Catalog governance, storage topology, and cluster policies
  • Define and scale medallion architecture standards (Bronze, Silver, Gold) across domains
  • Establish platform standards and reusable patterns to accelerate Databricks adoption across teams
  • Design and implement secure, compliant data access frameworks (RBAC, ABAC, row/column-level security)
  • Lead CI/CD and DevOps patterns for Databricks deployments, ensuring audit-ready pipelines
  • Optimize performance and cost across Delta Lake pipelines (partitioning, clustering, Photon, optimization strategies)
  • Build reusable ingestion frameworks for structured and streaming data (API, Kafka, CDC, batch pipelines)
  • Partner with Data Governance, Security, SRE, and Legal teams to align platform design with healthcare compliance requirements
  • Provide architectural guidance on PHI/PII data handling and lifecycle management
  • Evaluate and recommend platform tooling (build vs. buy decisions)
  • Mentor engineers and architects; establish design reviews and documentation practices

Basic Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or relative experience, and typically requires 7+ years of experience in data engineering and data architecture
  • Proven experience building and scaling Databricks platforms from the ground up, including workspace provisioning, Unity Catalog, and governance frameworks
  • Strong hands-on expertise in Databricks and Azure (ADLS Gen2, networking, identity, security)
  • Demonstrated ability to remain technically hands-on while leading architecture decisions
  • Deep expertise in Delta Lake, including performance optimization and data lifecycle management
  • Experience designing enterprise data platforms in regulated environments (e.g., PHI/PII handling)
  • Strong understanding of data governance, access controls, and compliance frameworks
  • Proven ability to establish standards, drive adoption, and influence multiple engineering teams

Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • Experience in healthcare or other regulated industries (HIPAA, PHI, compliance-driven environments)
  • Experience scaling early-stage Databricks platforms and building enterprise-wide standards
  • Familiarity with streaming and event-driven architectures (Kafka, Structured Streaming)
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform, Azure Bicep)
  • Knowledge of Databricks advanced features (Delta Live Tables, Unity Catalog federation, Delta Sharing)
  • Experience supporting AI/ML data readiness and feature engineering pipelines
