What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Database Developer Contractor, and why are they important?

A Database Developer Contractor needs strong SQL programming skills, experience with database design, and a solid understanding of relational and non-relational database systems, typically supported by a degree in computer science or information technology. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, and knowledge of ETL processes, as well as certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with clients and teams. These competencies are crucial for delivering scalable, secure, and efficient database solutions on time and within project requirements.

What does a Database Developer on a contract basis do?

A Database Developer on a contract basis is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining databases for organizations during a specified project or time period. They create and optimize database structures, write and test queries, and ensure data integrity and security. Contract Database Developers work independently or as part of a team to deliver solutions that meet client requirements, often focusing on tasks like performance tuning, troubleshooting, and implementing new features. Their role is project-based, so they may work with multiple clients over time.

Job description

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Data Product Owner to own and evolve Caleroโ€™s SaaS Management Platform. This is a data-intensive role where success hinges on usage and financial modellingโ€”ensuring data is accurate and drives real business decisions.
You will act as the primary customer advocate: listening intently to users, reviewing data driven scenarios, synthesizing feedback, and collaborating with engineers to deliver solutions that solve genuine problems.

Key Responsibilities

Product Ownership & Delivery

  • Own and refine the product backlog, aligning features with business priorities, customer needs, and technical feasibility.
  • Translate customer requirements into clearly defined problems, broken down as user stories, epics, and acceptance criteria with clear value focus.
  • Drive ruthless value slicing โ€” deliver features in small, high-impact increments to enable early feedback and reduce rework.
  • Maintain predictable delivery and transparent road mapping, ensuring alignment between sprint outputs and roadmap commitments.

Data & Modeling Leadership

  • Define and validate financial data models, ensuring figures (e.g., allocations, pricing, usage metrics) are accurate, consistent, and actionable.
  • Hands-on configuration of automation/integration tools (e.g., Make, n8n, Zapier) to prototype and test data workflows; comfortably read and interpret API specs to validate feasibility.

Customer & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Be the deep customer advocate and business user proxy:
    • Deeply understand "Jobs To Be Done" in contract management, pricing, usage, and allocations.
    • Demonstrate and test product capabilities as a business user would, ensuring they solve real problems.
  • Lead customer workshops, proof-of-concepts, and pilot programs to capture feedback early.
  • Provide evidence to stakeholders that delivered capabilities are fit for business purpose, not just technically complete.

Measurement & Reporting

  • Define and track KPIs and success metrics for features and releases (e.g., adoption, usage, savings delivered, customer satisfaction).
  • Report on performance to leadership and stakeholders, ensuring transparency on outcomes, risks, and trade-offs.
  • Manage scope rigorously to deliver on time and prevent feature creep.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5+ years as a Product Owner in SaaS/B2B environments, ideally with finance-related products involving data modeling, contracts, pricing, usage, etc.
  • Experience ensuring financial figures are modeled accurately and deliver business value; comfortable with data quality & analytics.
  • Ability to read/interpret REST API documentation and configure basic automation/integration flows (e.g., n8n, Make, Zapier, Workato).
  • Expertise in gathering/prioritizing requirements, writing acceptance criteria, and validating against real customer outcomes in data-heavy contexts.
  • Proven agile delivery (Scrum/Kanban/SAFe) with emphasis on predictable, feedback-driven results.
  • Bonus: FinOps, ITAM, SaaS financial management, or ERP/accounting integrations (e.g., NetSuite).

Key Attributes

  • Customer-obsessed โ€“ represents the voice of the user at every stage.
  • Outcome-driven โ€“ focuses on solving problems, not just shipping features.
  • Analytical & accountable โ€“ measures impact and reports results clearly.
  • Collaborative communicator โ€“ transparent with stakeholders, candid about trade-offs and risks.
  • Technically curious โ€“ eager to explore APIs, integrations, and new automation tools.

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to innovate on new growth product.
  • A collaborative and innovative product culture.
  • Exposure to enterprise SaaS ecosystems and workflow automation platforms.
  • Competitive compensation, benefits, and professional growth opportunities.
