What does a database developer contract do?

A Database Developer on a contract basis is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining databases for organizations during a specified project or time period. They create and optimize database structures, write and test queries, and ensure data integrity and security. Contract Database Developers work independently or as part of a team to deliver solutions that meet client requirements, often focusing on tasks like performance tuning, troubleshooting, and implementing new features. Their role is project-based, so they may work with multiple clients over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a database developer contract?

A Database Developer Contractor needs strong SQL programming skills, experience with database design, and a solid understanding of relational and non-relational database systems, typically supported by a degree in computer science or information technology. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, and knowledge of ETL processes, as well as certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with clients and teams. These competencies are crucial for delivering scalable, secure, and efficient database solutions on time and within project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by database developer contracts?

Database Developers on contract often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to unfamiliar database environments, integrating with existing teams, and understanding legacy systems. Since contract roles typically have tight deadlines, contractors must rapidly assess project requirements and deliver solutions efficiently. Additionally, clear communication with stakeholders and in-house developers is essential to ensure alignment on database design, security standards, and performance expectations.

What is the difference between Database Developer Contract vs Database Administrator?

Title: Civil Estimator Location: Rochester, NY, US Salary Range: $55,000.00 To $130,000.00 Annually At Hewitt Young, excellence is our standard. We look for Builders who take ownership, push through challenges, and care about results as much as their craft. When you join our team, you earn your edge every day, and we make sure it pays off

Role Mission: The Civil Estimator builds the possibility by turning opportunities into wins. Once a project has been selected, this role ensures Hewitt Young delivers precise, competitive estimates that secure profitable work and sets the field up for success. Core Responsibilities: Analyze bid documents, drawings, and specifications to develop accurate quantity takeoffs and detailed cost estimates.

Prepare and submit competitive project proposals aligned with HY's operational focus and profitability objectives. Partner with the Chief Estimator to develop scope strategies, evaluate project risks, and establish pricing approaches. Support Project Managers, Procurement teams, and Executives throughout buyouts and final contract negotiations.

Assist Project Managers with project status reviews, scope clarifications, and change order pricing support. Estimate construction costs for both public plan-and-spec projects and negotiated private work with partially completed design documents. Manage estimating assignments from start to finish, ensuring thorough, accurate, and comprehensive project estimates.

Develop proposals that clearly outline assumptions, allowances, value-engineering opportunities, and alternates. Coordinate with equipment suppliers and material vendors to obtain pricing that aligns with project requirements and budgets. Take full ownership of the estimating process, including client communication, proposal development, and project handoff.

Maintain and track estimating activities, project data, and pipeline information within Top Builder. Keep estimating databases, bid logs, and cost libraries accurate and up to date. Attend pre-bid meetings, site walkthroughs, and jobsite visits to support accurate project evaluation and pricing.

Skills and Knowledge: Strong technical understanding of civil construction methods, practices, and related scopes of work. Proficient in estimating software, digital takeoff tools, and construction cost analysis. Ability to accurately interpret construction drawings, contracts, specifications, and bid documents.

Solid financial and analytical acumen with the ability to support and maintain profitability goals. Effective and professional communicator with the ability to build strong relationships with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and internal teams. Consistently demonstrates professionalism in appearance, communication, and conduct across all internal and external interactions.

WHAT YOU'LL FIND HERE AT HEWITT YOUNG: At Hewitt Young, we don't just fill roles - we build careers. Above all we take pride in our work. Every project reflects who we are, how we operate, and the standards we stand behind.

If you're driven, accountable, and ready to grow, you'll find your place here. Hewitt Young is an equal opportunity employer and consider all applicants without regard to any legally protected status. This is a full time position.
