What does a database designer do?

A database designer creates and organizes the structure of databases to ensure efficient data storage, retrieval, and management. They analyze data requirements, develop schemas, and use tools like SQL to implement the design, often collaborating with developers and stakeholders. Strong knowledge of data modeling, normalization, and database management systems is essential for this role.

Is DBA still in demand?

Database Design Designers, often called DBAs, remain in demand as organizations continue to rely on data management and security. Skills in SQL, database architecture, and familiarity with cloud platforms increase employability, especially with certifications like Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server. The role typically requires ongoing learning to keep up with evolving database technologies.

Is being a DBA a stressful job?

Being a database administrator (DBA) can be stressful due to the responsibility of maintaining data integrity, ensuring system uptime, and managing security. DBAs often work under tight deadlines and may need to respond quickly to system issues or outages, which can contribute to job stress. However, the level of stress varies depending on the organization, workload, and experience level.

How much do database designers make?

Database designers typically earn a median annual salary of around $80,000 to $100,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in database management systems can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $120,000. Certifications in database technologies and proficiency with tools like SQL and data modeling can also influence earning potential.

You will support project teams by producing accurate ductwork, piping, equipment layouts, and spooling drawings that enable efficient fabrication and field installation. This role combines technical expertise with collaboration across engineering, project management, and fabrication teams to deliver high-quality designs that meet project goals, budgets, and schedules.

  • Organize and manage workload to meet project deadlines while maintaining budgets and quality standards.
  • Maintain and update HVAC drawing standards, templates, and project databases.
  • Create accurate fabrication and installation drawings, ensuring compliance with SMACNA standards, project specifications, and applicable codes.
  • Suggest design improvements and value engineering opportunities based on initial concepts and practical fabrication/installation feedback.
  • Assist in material selection and specification for HVAC systems and components.
  • Perform quality reviews of drawings and models to ensure accuracy and constructability.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to junior designers and project teams as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Certifications/Licenses: Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and/or fabrication CAD software (e.g., CADmep, Fabrication CAMduct) required. Valid driver's license a plus.
  • Physical Demands: Primarily office-based with occasional job site visits; ability to sit for extended periods and use computer equipment for long durations.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Professional office environment with periodic field exposure. Must follow all safety protocols when visiting job sites. This is not a safety-sensitive position.

Required Skills
  • Advanced technical expertise in HVAC CAD design and 3D modeling.
  • Strong understanding of commercial and industrial HVAC systems, ductwork, piping, and fabrication processes.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, constructible drawings.
