The Data Engineer is responsible for the comprehensive data and reporting infrastructure at Marquette. This role involves developing and maintaining data solutions, including an enterprise data warehouse, data visualization, and operational reporting. Responsibilities include end to end solution architecture, database administration, converting customer requirements into BI applications, and providing technical support and training. The Data Engineer works directly with customers to deliver end-to-end data solutions, provides on-call support, and implements process improvements to enhance data delivery and efficiency
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Develop, maintain and monitor data analytic solutions, including the data warehouse, data visualization tools and operational reporting solutions.
2. Responsible for end-to-end solution architecture and development, from modeling database tables and writing custom ETL code to improving indexing and developing testing modules.
3. Work directly with units on campus to understand their data needs and convert complex requirements into sound business intelligence applications within the BI environment. Provide technical support and training to users on data-related issues.
4. Database administration including regular monitoring, server setup, security provisioning and maintaining a secure database environment to support reporting efforts.
5. Identify, design and implement internal process improvements to enhance data delivery and automate manual processes. Research and integrate new technologies and software engineering tools to reduce complexity, increase capacity and improve overall efficiency
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field; or comparable experience.
Minimum of 3 years' experience in data analytics or data solutions
Demonstrated experience writing complex SQL queries and designing reporting data sets for business intelligence applications
Demonstrated experience managing and working with common databases (SQL Server, Oracle, MySql, etc.)
Previous workplace experience utilizing reporting and visualization tools to develop and publish business reports
Demonstrated experience with scripting language (Python, R, PowerShell, or others).
Strong Analytical and problem-solving skills
Demonstrated continuous improvement mindset
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience with Microsoft BI tools.
Experience with an ETL tool like SSIS, Informatica, Talend, etc.
Experience with MLOps pipelines (DVC, Airflow, etc.)
Experience with API data integrations
Proficient knowledge of Python and experience building customized data pipelines
