Job description

JOB TITLE:  Electrician

FLSA CLASSIFICATION:  Non-exempt, hourly employee.

WORK DAYS:  246 days (not including paid holidays).

STANDARD HOURS PER DAY:  8 hours per day (not including a 30-minute unpaid duty-free meal break).

WORK YEAR: The work year for the Electrician begins on the first weekday in July and ends 12 months later on the last weekday in June.

SALARY SCHEDULE & BENEFITS: The Electricianis paid on the "Maintenance, Grounds, and Skilled Trades" salary schedule and is eligible for benefits on the "Support Staff" benefits schedule. Starting hourly rate is $21.71, commensurate with experience. 

REPORTS TO: Assistant Director of Building Systems & Efficiencies. 

SUPERVISES: The Electrician does not supervise any other employee(s).

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Under the direction of the Assistant Director, the Electrician performs skilled and semi-skilled work involving the installation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems and equipment throughout district facilities. Work includes school buildings, support facilities, portable or temporary classrooms, exterior systems, and renovation or new construction projects. The Electrician works independently on routine assignments and as part of a crew on larger or more complex projects, and performs related duties as assigned. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Electrical installation, maintenance, and repair
    1. Performs electrical installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, service, and repair work for district buildings, grounds-related electrical systems, and support facilities.
    2. Installs, maintains, and services electrical systems and components, including interior and exterior lighting, branch circuits, panels, switches, transformers, motors, pumps, portable classroom connections, lift stations, and equipment associated with renovation and new construction.
    3. Troubleshoots, repairs, and replaces electrical parts and components, including wiring, relays, motors, pumps, control panels, distribution panels, circuit breakers, fuses, conduit, receptacles, and related devices.
    4. Ensures all work is performed in compliance with applicable electrical codes, local ordinances, district standards, and workplace safety requirements.
  2. Work management, documentation, and coordination
    1. Receives and prioritizes work orders; coordinates assigned project tasks; estimates materials and labor; and determines the tools, equipment, and supplies needed for each job.
    2. Completes and maintains work orders, purchase requests, daily activity logs, and maintenance records for assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.
    3. Maintains accurate, complete, and timely records, reports, and other job-related documentation.
  3. Technical skills, tools, and drawings
    1. Performs trade-related mathematical calculations, including measurements, load-related calculations, amperage, wattage, voltage drop, and conductor or conduit sizing.
    2. Uses hand tools, power tools, testing instruments, and diagnostic equipment associated with the electrical trade.
    3. Reads and interprets blueprints, diagrams, sketches, specifications, and schematics related to assigned work.
  4. Safety, emergencies, and equipment care
    1. Maintains tools, equipment, materials, and assigned vehicles in safe operating condition and follows safe work practices at all times.
    2. Responds to electrical emergencies and urgent facility issues to diagnose problems, restore service, and reduce the risk of fire, equipment damage, or other hazardous conditions.
  5. Professional development and technology
    1. Maintains current knowledge of electrical systems, equipment, controls, and job-related technology used by the district.
    2. Participates in district-supported training and professional development to maintain and improve job knowledge, technical skills, safety practices, and code awareness.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Performs other related duties as assigned. 

ENTRY-LEVEL REQUIREMENTS:

1. EDUCATION/TRAINING: High school diploma or GED required. Prefer completion of vocational training, apprenticeship training, or documented coursework in electrical trades. 

2. EXPERIENCE: One to three years of electrical maintenance, construction, or service experience preferred; school, commercial, or institutional facilities experience preferred. Equivalent combinations of education, training, apprenticeship experience, and work experience may be considered. 

3. CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Valid Indiana driver's license required. Any locally required electrical license or registration must be obtained and maintained if applicable to the jurisdiction in which work is performed. 

4. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to respond to emergency call-ins, work from ladders and lifts, and work in occupied school environments in a safe and professional manner.

  4. Communication: Requires the ability to read, interpret, and communicate technical information, work orders, specifications, safety procedures, and instructions.
  5. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to apply basic arithmetic, decimals, percentages, measurements, and practical geometry used in electrical work.
  6. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  7. Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Work requires frequent standing, walking, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and working from ladders, scaffolds, or lifts. The position regularly requires lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and may occasionally require moving heavier items with assistance or appropriate equipment. 
 

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors. Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate textures. Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. 

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to dust, temperature extremes, noise, machinery, energized equipment, confined spaces, and varying light levels.Â
