How much do data source jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 1, 2026, the average yearly pay for data source in the United States is $165,018.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $133,500.00 and $170,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Source, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Source, you need a comprehensive understanding of data collection, data integrity, and compliance with relevant data standards, often supported by experience in data management or information systems. Familiarity with database management systems, data warehousing tools, and data governance frameworks is typically required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills are essential soft skills for ensuring accurate and accessible data delivery. These abilities are crucial for maintaining data quality, supporting decision-making, and upholding organizational trust in information assets.

How do Data Source professionals typically collaborate with data engineers and analysts on large projects?

Data Source professionals play a key role in bridging the gap between raw data and actionable insights. They work closely with data engineers to ensure data is collected, integrated, and maintained accurately from multiple sources, while also collaborating with analysts to understand data requirements and support reporting needs. Regular communication and alignment meetings are common, and successful collaboration often involves clearly documenting data flows, troubleshooting data quality issues, and jointly developing data pipelines. This teamwork helps ensure that data is reliable, accessible, and tailored to the organization's analytical goals.

What is the difference between Data Source vs Data Analyst?

AspectData SourceData Analyst
Primary RoleProvides raw data for analysisInterprets and analyzes data to generate insights
Required SkillsData collection, database managementData analysis, visualization, reporting
Work EnvironmentData collection points, databases, data warehousesOffice, remote, analytics teams
CertificationsDatabase certifications, data managementExcel, SQL, data analysis certifications

In summary, a Data Source focuses on providing and managing raw data, while a Data Analyst interprets this data to support decision-making. Both roles are essential in the data ecosystem but serve different functions within the data workflow.

What are Data Sources?

Data sources are origins or locations from which data is obtained for analysis, reporting, or storage. They can include databases, spreadsheets, APIs, data warehouses, or even physical files. In technology and business contexts, a data source provides the raw information that systems and analysts use to make informed decisions or drive applications. Understanding the type and structure of a data source is crucial for effective data integration and management.

Job description

Position Summary...What you'll do...The Decision Science End-to-End (E2E) team serves Walmart Enterprise Operations. We collaborate across multiple business areas to accelerate data-driven decisions and build lasting analytical capabilities. Strong data foundations are at the core of how we work: we invest in getting the modeling, pipeline design, and data quality right, because everything our partners depend on is built on top of that layer. We are a lean team, and every member is expected to wear multiple hats. On any given week you might be identifying a new data source, building a pipeline, validating a data model, or walking a business partner through a result. We pride ourselves on full ownership and build partner relationships grounded in trust. Our partners count on us not just to deliver; we speak up when something needs to change, before they have to ask. Your Opportunity We are seeking a talented and experienced Data Engineer III to join our team. The ideal candidate brings deep experience building reliable data pipelines, designing databases and data models, and transforming raw data into trusted, performant assets that business stakeholders depend on daily. You understand that strong data foundations are not a starting point you move past, they are what you protect and build on throughout your career. As part of Decision Science E2E, you will contribute across the full data lifecycle, from source identification and modeling to pipeline engineering and stakeholder communication. You will be challenged with complex, ambiguous business problems and collaborate with multiple stakeholders to solve them, gaining a unique perspective on what it takes to operate one of the world's largest retailers. Your Responsibilities
Data Foundations and Strategy Understand, articulate, and apply the team's data principles to business problems spanning one or more functions. Champion strong data foundations by ensuring that the models, pipelines, and structures your team builds are correct, documented, and built to last. Help shape how data is governed, structured, and delivered across the areas we support.
Data Transformation and Integration Design and build end-to-end data pipelines. Extract data from diverse source systems, transform it into structures fit for analysis and reporting, and load it into targets that power downstream consumers. Stay current on analytics and data engineering trends and bring relevant improvements back to the team.
Data Source Identification Identify the most appropriate source for each data problem. Understand priority order of requirements and service level agreements. Perform initial data quality checks on extracted data and validate fitness for purpose before integration.
Data Modeling Analyze complex data elements, systems, data flows, dependencies, and relationships. Develop logical and physical data models including data warehouse and data mart designs. Define relational tables, primary and foreign keys, and stored procedures. Evaluate existing data models and physical databases for variances and discrepancies. Treat every model as a foundational artifact that will outlast any single project.
Code Development and Testing Write clean, well-tested, and documented production code. Create test cases, build proofs of concept, and deploy software to production. Maintain playbooks and provide timely progress updates to stakeholders.
Versatility and Cross-Team Contribution Wear multiple hats willingly and effectively. Step into gaps where the team needs coverage, whether that is validating a data source, supporting a partner presentation, helping QA a colleague's pipeline, or documenting a process that only lives in someone's head. On this team, ownership extends to what needs doing, not just what is assigned.
Problem Formulation Translate ambiguous business problems into concrete data or technical solutions. Identify the right method (analytics, big data, or automation), communicate the approach clearly, and share examples that demonstrate how the solution addresses the business need.
Your Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; or 5+ years of hands-on Data Engineering experience in a production environment.
  • SQL & Query Excellence: You hold SQL to an extremely high standard: writing performant, readable, well-structured queries and optimizing the work of others. You treat every query as production code. SQL is a core data foundation skill and you treat it accordingly.
  • Relational Database Depth: Solid experience designing and working with relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or equivalent). Schema design, indexing strategies, relationships, and stored procedures are second nature to you.
  • Big Data & Cloud Platforms: Hands-on experience with large-scale data processing on a major cloud platform (e.g., GCP, or Azure). Familiarity with distributed query engines, object storage, and cloud-native data tools (e.g., BigQuery, Spark, Databricks, Hive, or equivalents).
  • Pipeline Orchestration: Experience designing and maintaining scheduled, dependency-aware data workflows. Proficiency with orchestration tooling such as Airflow, dbt, SSIS, or similar, including retry logic, failure handling, and SLA monitoring.
  • Programming: Proven track record building production-quality code in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Java, Scala, C#, or equivalent). Code is clean, testable, and maintainable.
  • Data Modeling & Migration: Skilled in translating business requirements into physical data models. Comfortable with data migration strategies, schema evolution, and integration design.
  • Versatility and Range: Comfortable contributing across the full data lifecycle, not just one layer of the stack. You step into what needs doing, build context quickly in unfamiliar areas, and do not wait for a perfect handoff before moving work forward.
  • Ownership Mindset: You hold yourself and your work to an extremely high standard. You proactively identify problems, drive solutions to completion, and take full accountability for what you ship, from source to dashboard.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Highly effective at distilling complex data concepts for non-technical audiences. Skilled in negotiation, facilitation, and building consensus across teams you don't directly control. Strong presentation skills and the ability to influence without authority.
