What is a data security specialist?

A Data Security Specialist is a professional responsible for protecting an organization’s digital information from unauthorized access, breaches, and other cyber threats. They develop and implement security policies, monitor networks for suspicious activity, and respond to security incidents. Data Security Specialists also ensure compliance with data protection regulations and work to identify and address vulnerabilities in systems. Their role is crucial in safeguarding sensitive data and maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of information assets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data security specialist?

To thrive as a Data Security Specialist, you need a strong grasp of information security principles, risk assessment, and a relevant degree in computer science or cybersecurity. Familiarity with security frameworks (such as NIST, ISO 27001), encryption tools, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and certifications like CISSP or CISM are typically expected. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for addressing security threats and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are crucial for protecting sensitive information, ensuring regulatory compliance, and mitigating cyber threats in an evolving digital landscape.

How does a data security specialist typically collaborate with other departments to ensure comprehensive data protection?

Job description

We are looking for a Director - Data Security Specialist based in the United States, reporting to our Sr Director, Data Security Specialist within the Sales and Go-to-Market department.

You will lead and grow the sales engineering organization for the Data Security Product line, including the Gen AI market, across the US, Canada and LATAM. You will align closely with GTM Sales Leaders, Product Management, and Engineering to execute strategic solutions and close deals for customers and partners.

What you'll do (Role Expectations)

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop the sales engineering team covering the Americas.

  • Refine and scale core sales engineering processes including discovery, technical qualification, and proof-of-concept

  • Partner with sales leadership and clients to design and present business solutions that drive revenue growth

  • Work within a matrixed environment to promote and support the Data Security Business line through value-based selling

Who You Are (Success Profile)

  • You thrive in ambiguity. You're comfortable building the path as you walk it. You thrive in a dynamic environment, seeing ambiguity not as a hindrance, but as the raw material to build something meaningful.

  • You act like an owner. Your passion for the mission fuels your bias for action. You operate with integrity because you genuinely care about the outcome. True ownership involves leveraging dynamic range: the ability to navigate seamlessly between high-level strategy and hands-on execution.

  • You are a problem-solver. You love running towards the challenges because you are laser-focused on finding the solution, knowing that solving the hard problems delivers the biggest impact.

  • You are a high-trust collaborator. You are ambitious for the team, not just yourself. You embrace our challenge culture by giving and receiving ongoing feedback-knowing that candor delivered with clarity and respect is the truest form of teamwork and the fastest way to earn trust.

  • You are a learner. You have a true growth mindset and are obsessed with your own development, actively seeking feedback to become a better partner and a stronger teammate. You love what you do and you do it with purpose.

What We're Looking for (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Demonstrated curiosity and active exploration of AI tools, with a proven history of integrating new technologies to enhance daily workflows and augment problem-solving
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, a related field, or equivalent experience

  • Proven track record in sales or systems engineering with experience managing and directing a sales engineering team by mentoring, coaching, and developing talent

  • Technical expertise in Data Protection and web-related technologies

  • Proven ability to communicate value-based selling in a matrixed GTM environment

What Will Make You Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience working with Zscaler or competitive solutions within the Data Protection Market

  • Deep understanding of SaaS-based technologies and regulatory compliance across EMEA and APJ

  • Experience teaming with large GTM and Partner Ecosystems in a matrix environment
