What is a Data Scraping job?

A Data Scraping job involves extracting structured data from websites or online sources using automated tools or scripts. This data is then used for various purposes, such as market research, competitive analysis, or business intelligence. Professionals in this field typically use programming languages like Python or tools like Scrapy and BeautifulSoup to collect and organize data efficiently. However, ethical considerations and legal guidelines must be followed to ensure compliance with website policies and data protection laws.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Data Scraping position, and why are they important?

To excel in Data Scraping, proficiency in programming languages such as Python or JavaScript, familiarity with web protocols, and understanding of data extraction methodologies are essential, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with web scraping tools like BeautifulSoup, Scrapy, or Selenium, and knowledge of APIs are commonly required; relevant certifications in data analysis or automation can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals successfully tackle complex data challenges and collaborate with teams. These competencies are vital to reliably gather, process, and deliver valuable data while adhering to legal and ethical standards.

What are the typical challenges faced in a Data Scraping role, and how are they addressed?

Data Scraping professionals often encounter challenges such as dealing with anti-scraping measures, frequent changes to website structures, and managing large volumes of unstructured data. These obstacles require adaptability and creative problem-solving, as well as continuous learning to update scripts and leverage the latest tools. Team collaboration is common—data scrapers may work closely with data analysts, engineers, or business stakeholders to ensure the data collected meets the project's needs. Proactively communicating and staying current with industry best practices helps data scraping specialists efficiently navigate these challenges and deliver high-quality results.

This role emphasizes sustainable data management and continuous improvement to strengthen data quality over time, support confident customer product selection, and enable scalable, long‑term fit‑up data capabilities.

THE DETAILS:

Data Acquisition

  • Close data gaps across cross-references, fit-up, specs, and model years to support accurate matching
  • Research fit-up and cross-reference data so customers and dealers can find compatible products
  • Gather key data to link equipment to compatible replacement products
  • Lead data collection through research, partner networks, and cross-functional collaboration
  • Manage contractors, crowd-sourced input, and approved third-party sources
  • Standardize collection formats and validate data before handoff

Data Integrity

  • Partner with Marketing UI and IT to support Part Finder and data standards
  • Document new data relationships and communicate updates internally
  • Validate fit-up and cross-reference data for accuracy and completeness
  • Work with the Data Analyst to prepare data for Hybris and resolve issues
  • Audit Oregon Tool and third-party sites and report trends to product managers

Continuous Improvement

  • Support Part Finder launches by preparing, exporting, and testing data
  • Identify top cross-reference sources to improve fit-up data coverage
  • Use stakeholder and end-user insights to improve data quality and experience
  • Improve data sourcing, processing, and scraping, including AI tools

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis in Data Analytics, Marketing, Business Administration, Information Systems, or related discipline preferred, or equivalent professional experience
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in a data‑focused, product data, or data sourcing role, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated experience working with large, complex, and often unstructured data sets with strong attention to detail
  • Data acquisition, data validation, and data organization experience across multiple internal and external sources
  • Experience working in a global environment with cross‑functional teams and geographically dispersed data sources
  • Experience coordinating and managing projects involving multiple inputs, contributors, and dependencies
  • Familiarity with data sourcing, web research, and data extraction techniques; web scraping experience a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to clearly express information in both technical and non‑technical terms
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), with emphasis on intermediate to advanced Excel skills for data mapping, comparison, and analysis
  • Comfortable leveraging modern productivity and AI‑enabled tools to improve efficiency and data processes

Availability

  • Available to work on site as required by job; eligible for domestic and international travel several times per year up to two weeks’ duration

At Oregon Tool, we provide a reasonable, good-faith estimate of the compensation range for this role of $86,000 to $100,000.
