What is a Data Science Startup job?

A Data Science Startup job involves working at an early-stage company that leverages data science to build innovative products or services. Employees typically wear multiple hats, working on data analysis, machine learning models, data pipelines, and sometimes even product or business strategy. The role often requires strong programming skills (Python, SQL), statistical knowledge, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment. Since startups have limited resources, adaptability, problem-solving skills, and a willingness to experiment are crucial. It’s a great opportunity to gain diverse experience and make a significant impact in shaping a company's data strategy.

What are the typical challenges faced when working at a data science startup?

Working at a data science startup often involves managing ambiguity, adapting to frequently changing priorities, and balancing multiple roles due to lean team structures. You may be responsible for the entire data pipeline—from data collection and cleaning to building models and presenting findings—making flexibility and resourcefulness essential. Tight project timelines, evolving business goals, and limited initial resources can also be common, so being proactive and self-motivated helps you thrive. On the positive side, these challenges offer significant opportunities to learn rapidly, take ownership of impactful projects, and shape both the company's products and your own career trajectory.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Data Science Startup position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Data Science Startup, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, and a solid understanding of statistics and machine learning. Familiarity with data visualization tools, cloud platforms, and relevant certifications such as Certified Data Scientist or AWS Certified Data Analytics are highly valued. Adaptability, creative problem-solving, and effective communication are key soft skills that set standout professionals apart in this environment. These skills are vital for driving innovation, efficiently handling rapidly changing projects, and collaborating in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial setting.

This role plays a key part in supporting the integration and ongoing operations of One Core, a recently acquired thirdparty business, as well as other external components used across Vertiv solutions.

This position is focused on program ownership, operational execution, and crossfunctional coordination-ensuring warranty responsibilities, workflows, and escalation paths are clearly defined, consistently executed, and continuously improved. While the role leverages data, dashboards, and reporting to drive insight and accountability, it is fundamentally a program management and execution role, not a data science or modeling position.

Key Responsibilities Program Ownership - One Core & 3rdParty Warranty Execution

  • Own warranty program execution for One Core and other 3rdparty components integrated into Vertiv solutions.
  • Define and maintain warranty processes, ownership models, and escalation paths for nonVertiv products.
  • Ensure warranty terms and execution responsibilities are clearly documented, understood, and operationalized.

Process & Workflow Management

  • Design, implement, and maintain warranty workflows using Smartsheet or similar platforms to support intake, tracking, escalation, and resolution.
  • Partner with Service, Quality, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Technical Support to align processes with operational requirements.
  • Identify inefficiencies and drive continuous improvement to reduce cycle time, risk, and customer impact.

CrossFunctional Coordination & Communication

  • Lead regular crossfunctional cadence to review performance, open issues, risks, and corrective actions related to 3rdparty warranty execution.
  • Act as the primary coordination point for warranty topics involving One Core and external component suppliers.
  • Communicate status, risks, and recommendations to internal stakeholders and leadership.

Escalation & Issue Resolution

  • Manage escalated warranty issues involving thirdparty components, driving timely resolution through coordination across teams.
  • Balance customer experience, contractual obligations, and cost considerations when resolving complex warranty scenarios.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for 3rdparty warranty execution and governance.

Reporting & Insights

  • Define and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) related to warranty execution, escalation trends, cycle time, and recurring issues.
  • Develop dashboards and reports using Smartsheet, Power BI, or similar tools to provide actionable program visibility.
  • Use insights to support prioritization, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Operations, or a related field preferred.
  • 4-8 years of experience in program management, process improvement, or operations, preferably within warranty, service, manufacturing, or customer support environments.
  • Strong experience managing crossfunctional programs with multiple stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with workflow and reporting tools such as Smartsheet (advanced user preferred).
  • Experience with dashboards and analytics tools (Power BI or similar) to monitor performance and support decisionmaking.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate data into operational actions.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and manage ambiguity.

Preferred:

  • CAPM, PMP, or equivalent program/project management experience.
  • Experience supporting thirdparty suppliers, integrations, or multivendor environments.

TIME TRAVEL REQUIRED
