What is a data science PhD?

A Data Science PhD is a doctoral-level degree focused on advanced research in data science, which combines elements of statistics, computer science, and domain expertise. Students in a Data Science PhD program typically work on developing new methods for analyzing large datasets, creating machine learning algorithms, and addressing complex problems in areas such as artificial intelligence, data mining, and predictive analytics. Graduates are prepared for careers in academia, research, and industry, where they can lead data-driven projects and contribute to advancements in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data science PhD?

To thrive as a Data Science PhD, you need advanced expertise in statistics, machine learning, data analysis, and a doctoral degree in a quantitative field. Proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, experience with big data frameworks (e.g., Spark, Hadoop), and familiarity with data visualization tools are typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help you translate complex data insights for diverse stakeholders. These skills are vital for driving innovative research, making data-driven decisions, and contributing impactful solutions in data-centric environments.

What are some common challenges faced by data science PhDs when transitioning from academia to industry roles?

Data Science PhDs often encounter challenges such as adapting to the faster pace and collaborative nature of industry projects compared to academic research. In industry, there is a greater emphasis on delivering practical solutions within tight deadlines and working closely with cross-functional teams like engineering and product management. Additionally, data science work in industry may require balancing technical rigor with business impact, often prioritizing actionable insights over exhaustive analysis. Building strong communication and stakeholder management skills can help ease this transition.

What can I do with a data science PhD?

A data science PhD prepares individuals for advanced roles in research, analytics, and machine learning across industries such as technology, finance, healthcare, and academia. Graduates can work as data scientists, machine learning engineers, research scientists, or data analysts, often utilizing programming languages like Python or R and tools such as TensorFlow or SQL. The degree also enables roles involving complex data modeling, statistical analysis, and developing innovative data-driven solutions.

Job description

Description
The Department of Ophthalmology/Flaum Eye Institute (FEI) at the University of Rochester invites applications for an open-rank, tenure-track faculty position. We welcome candidates with a broad interest in studying ocular structure and function in health and disease.
Primary appointment of the new faculty member will reside in the Department of Ophthalmology and Flaum Eye Institute, but there are ready opportunities for secondary appointments in the Center for Visual Science (a university-wide community of >55 faculty engaged in vision research), and other University of Rochester departments (e.g., the Institute of Optics, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology and Immunology, Biomedical Genetics, etc.).
The faculty hire will have access to considerable shared resources, both within the department of Ophthalmology (shared confocal microscope, histology laboratory, ophthalmic imaging core, biostatistics) and within the Medical Center. The successful candidate will work with an active program of undergraduate and graduate students through multiple, highly-ranked, degree-granting academic programs across the University of Rochester.
Qualifications
All candidates should hold a PhD, MD, MD PhD or equivalent. An important expectation for this job position is demonstrated research productivity and the ability to attract extramural funding. Depending on qualifications, an appointment will be made at the assistant, associate or full professor level. Preferred candidates will have expertise in advanced physiological optics (e.g., adaptive optics imaging, optical coherence tomography, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, two-photon imaging, fluorescence lifetime or other ocular imaging modalities) and/or expertise in advanced cellular and molecular biology, such as single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, lipidomics and connectomics, as well as stem cell and organoid approaches for studying retinal physiology. Research areas may involve humans, animal models and/or in vitro systems, as well as computational approaches including machine learning and artificial intelligence.
The position will be open until filled, but the application review process will start on July 15th, 2026.
Application Instructions
Applications should be submitted on Interfolio (apply.interfolio.com/162715).
For questions, email Dr. Ruchira Singh (Ruchira_Singh@urmc.rochester.edu) or Dr. Krystel Huxlin (khuxlin@ur.rochester.edu).
The referenced pay range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the base range of compensation for this faculty position. Individual salaries will be determined within the job's salary range and established based on (but not limited to) market data, experience and expertise of the individual, and with consideration to related position salaries.
