What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Biological Data Science Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Biological Data Science Intern, you need a solid background in biology, statistics, and programming, often supported by coursework or a degree in bioinformatics or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Python, R, and data analysis platforms, as well as experience with genomic databases and visualization software, is typically expected. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and teamwork skills help interns excel in collaborative research environments. These abilities enable accurate analysis of complex biological data and contribute to meaningful scientific discoveries.

What types of projects do interns typically work on during a Biological Data Science Internship?

Biological Data Science interns often work on projects involving the analysis of large biological datasets, such as genomic, proteomic, or clinical data. Typical tasks may include cleaning and preprocessing data, developing statistical models, and visualizing complex biological patterns. Interns frequently collaborate with both data scientists and biologists, gaining exposure to interdisciplinary teamwork and real-world research challenges. This hands-on experience helps interns build both their technical and scientific communication skills, making it a valuable stepping stone for careers in bioinformatics, computational biology, or related fields.

What is a Biological Data Science Internship?

A Biological Data Science Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience working at the intersection of biology and data science. Interns typically analyze biological datasets using computational tools, statistical methods, and programming languages such as Python or R. They may work on projects involving genomics, bioinformatics, drug discovery, or ecological modeling. The internship helps individuals develop both technical and domain-specific skills, preparing them for future careers in research, biotechnology, or academia.

What is the difference between Biological Data Science Internship vs Biological Data Analyst?

AspectBiological Data Science InternshipBiological Data Analyst

Job description

Solutions Architect

Illinois; New York; Cambridge, MA

We're seeking a Solutions Architect to join us in our mission to revolutionize the discovery of therapeutics and materials.

As a member of our Enterprise Informatics team, you'll work directly with top-tier customers, scientists, and developers to deploy, configure, and tune the company's high-end suite of molecular modeling and enterprise informatics applications and related systems. The key focus will be on novel and emerging solutions that integrate various digital platforms, software, and data management tools & platforms, to streamline the complex, high-throughput workflows involved in the discovery of Biologics for therapeutic applications. You'll also maintain scientific computing resources and work with highly-skilled individuals in technically challenging software environments. In your conversations with our Product Managers, you'll be the voice of the customer!

If you don't consider yourself an expert in all of the fields below, that's OK - we're looking to hire an adaptable polymath who's excited to learn on the job. Our highly collaborative team will be happy to help you get up to speed in any unfamiliar areas.

Who Will Love This Job:
  • A passionate engineer who has worked on workflow automation via web-based applications (e.g., REST APIs, SAML/SSO backends, containerized workloads)
  • A data wrangler with a background in unified data management, who crafts ETL pipelines to manage complex data with multiple sources and destinations (e.g., SQL databases, JSON, flat files)
  • A cloud computing expert who's familiar with Kubernetes technologies on at least one major cloud provider (e.g., AWS)
  • A problem-solver with excellent Linux diagnostic and troubleshooting skills in cloud environments, with good proficiency in writing code and scripts (e.g., Python, bash)
  • A quick learner who's driven to investigate and solve emergent issues in multiple production critical environments and, on occasion, open to availability on a flexible schedule
  • An excellent communicator who's willing to go the extra mile to help our customers and travel to customer sites
What You'll Do:
  • Ensure that our enterprise informatics software performs optimally in the customer cloud environments
  • Design, develop, implement and support optimal solutions for integration with customers' Biologics discovery workflows, research data systems and platforms
  • Help customers solve thorny technical issues by cooperatively building creative, customized solutions, while iterating on a fast schedule
  • Work closely with customers on installation, configuration, and update/maintenance of our cloud-hosted software and platform deployments that demand excellent technical expertise
  • Collaborate with product managers, scientists, and software developers to improve the deployment, support, configuration and features of our applications
What You Should Have:
  • Research data management background in the pharmaceutical industry (or similar scientific data space) with a focus or specialization in Biologics data
  • Experience with Biologics discovery platforms, data representations (e.g., HELM) and ETL pipelines for Biologics
  • A background in life sciences and/or physics (a formal academic background in the classical sciences is a huge plus!)
  • Open to occasional flexibility of schedule and availability for travel to customer sites
We'd Prefer To Hire Someone Who Has:
  • Clear grasp of data wrangling, data science or machine learning, as applied to Biologics research & discovery
  • A greater-than-end-user's understanding of Biologics informatics systems and platforms
  • Willingness for occasional travel to Schrödinger's offices and customer sites within the US

Pay and perks: Schrödinger understands it's people that make a company great. Because of this, we're prepared to offer a competitive salary, stock options, and a wide range of benefits that include healthcare (with dental and vision), a 401k, pre-tax commuter benefits, a flexible work schedule, and a parental leave program. We have catered meals in the office every day, a company culture that is relaxed but engaged, and over a month of paid vacation time. Our Administrative and Human Resources departments also plan a myriad of fun company-wide events. Estimated base salary range: $105,000 - $155,000. Actual compensation package is dependent on a number of factors, including, for example, experience, education, degrees held, market data, and business needs. If you have any questions regarding the compensation for this role, do not hesitate to reach out to a member of our Strategic Growth team.
