What are some common challenges faced by remote Data Science Instructors, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Data Science Instructors often face challenges related to student engagement and communication, as virtual environments can make it harder to gauge comprehension and foster interaction. To address this, instructors can leverage interactive teaching tools, encourage active participation through breakout sessions and live coding, and provide regular, personalized feedback. Additionally, establishing clear communication channels and setting expectations for responsiveness can help bridge the physical distance and create a supportive online learning community.

What does a Data Science Instructor Remote do?

A Data Science Instructor Remote teaches students foundational and advanced concepts in data science through online platforms. They develop lesson plans, deliver lectures or workshops, guide students through hands-on projects, and provide feedback on assignments. Instructors also stay current with industry trends to ensure their teaching materials remain relevant. They may interact with students via video calls, forums, and virtual office hours, supporting learners from diverse backgrounds and locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Science Instructor (Remote), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Science Instructor (Remote), you need a strong background in data science concepts, programming (Python or R), and a relevant degree or industry experience. Familiarity with data analysis tools like Jupyter Notebook, version control systems like Git, and learning management systems (LMS) is typically required. Outstanding communication, patience, and an ability to explain complex topics clearly help set exceptional instructors apart. These skills ensure students effectively learn analytical techniques and prepare for real-world data science roles in a remote environment.

Job description

At Fanatics Commerce, we're more than just a leader in licensed sports merchandise - we're a team united by a relentless passion for our fans and a commitment to innovation. We live by our BOLD Leadership principles: We Build Championship Teams, we're Obsessed with Fans, we embrace a Limitless Entrepreneurial Spirit, and we approach every challenge with a Determined and Relentless Mindset. If you're ready to contribute to a dynamic, fast-paced environment that thrives on collaboration and growth, we want you to be part of our team.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Data Scientist to contribute to Marketing Data Science at Fanatics Commerce. This is a high-impact, high-visibility role focused on improving marketing effectiveness through data science and machine learning. You will work on key modeling areas such as purchase propensity, digital ad optimization, customer routing, incrementality, and personalization - helping to build and deploy models that drive measurable business outcomes.

The ideal candidate has a strong track record of applying data science to marketing or customer-focused problems and delivering actionable insights. You bring solid technical expertise, good business intuition, and the ability to translate ambiguous problems into structured analyses and scalable solutions.

In this role, you will partner closely with stakeholders across Marketing, Product, Engineering, CRM, and Design, contributing through hands-on modeling, thoughtful analysis, and clear communication of results.

How You Will Make an Impact:

  • Work on data science projects across marketing and customer domains, including personalization, lifecycle optimization, retention, and engagement
  • Build, validate, and deploy machine learning and statistical models for use cases such as propensity modeling, segmentation, and LTV
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders (Marketing, Product, CRM, Engineering) to understand business problems and translate them into data science solutions
  • Contribute to the end-to-end model development lifecycle, including data exploration, feature engineering, modeling, evaluation, and deployment
  • Analyze large and complex datasets to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement in customer experience and marketing performance
  • Apply appropriate statistical methods and experimentation techniques to evaluate model performance and business impact
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure models are production-ready and integrated into downstream systems
  • Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Contribute to team-level best practices in modeling, code quality, and documentation
  • Support and mentor junior team members through collaboration and knowledge sharing

What You Bring to the Team:

  • BS or higher in a technical or quantitative field (Computer Science, Operations Research, Statistics, Economics, etc.)
  • 5+ years of hands-on work in marketing data science or related areas
  • Experience building and deploying machine learning models in production environments
  • Strong foundation in statistics and machine learning
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL, with experience working on large datasets
  • Experience working with customer or marketing-related data (e.g., personalization, segmentation, LTV, or experimentation)
  • Ability to work on moderately complex problems with some guidance
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

BONUS POINTS:

  • Experience with marketing analytics or customer lifecycle use cases
  • Familiarity with experimentation and measurement (e.g., A/B testing, basic causal inference concepts)
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams across Marketing, Product, and Engineering
  • Experience with large-scale data processing tools (e.g., Spark)
  • Track record of delivering business impact through data science projects

At Fanatics, we value transparency and honesty. If you don't meet every single requirement, that's okay - we still want to hear from you! We believe in the power of diverse experiences and talents. If you're excited about the role and confident that you can contribute, don't hesitate to apply. We're genuinely interested in how your unique skills and perspective can help us build something amazing together.
The salary range for this position is $170,000 - $210,000, which represents base pay only and does not include short-term or long-term incentive compensation. When determining base pay, as part of a final compensation package, we consider several factors such as location, experience, qualifications, and training.

Where you'll work and what's required

  • Location: San Mateo, CA Office
  • Hybrid work environment flexibility, with Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in office; Mondays and Fridays remote.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time for partner meetings, events, and other related activities.

What's in it For You:

  • Culture: Join a team where you're surrounded by top-tier talent, driven by a shared passion to relentlessly enhance the fan experience. Additionally, we offer flexible time off to help you recharge, along with a competitive 401k plan to support your financial future.
