What is a data science associate?

Data Science Associates are early-career professionals who support data-driven projects by collecting, cleaning, analyzing, and interpreting large datasets. They typically work under the guidance of more experienced data scientists and help build predictive models, generate reports, and provide insights to inform business decisions. This role often requires proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, familiarity with statistical methods, and strong problem-solving skills. Data Science Associates play a crucial part in transforming raw data into actionable information for organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data science associate?

To thrive as a Data Science Associate, you need strong analytical skills, a solid foundation in statistics and mathematics, and proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, often supported by a degree in data science, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with machine learning frameworks, data visualization tools, and database systems such as SQL is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and collaboration skills help you translate complex data insights into actionable business strategies. These skills are vital for extracting meaningful value from data and supporting data-driven decision-making within organizations.

How does a data science associate typically collaborate with other departments or teams within an organization?

Data Science Associates frequently work cross-functionally, partnering with teams such as engineering, product management, and business analytics to understand project requirements, share findings, and implement data-driven solutions. Collaboration often involves translating complex data results into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment on project goals and deliverables. This role requires strong communication skills, as associates routinely participate in meetings, present analyses, and gather feedback to refine their models or analyses. Effective teamwork helps ensure that data science initiatives support broader business objectives.

Through dedicated hard work and commitment, we provide distinctive quality and unparalleled customer service in all aspects of our business. We also know that our employees are the key to our success, and it is our mission to take care of them so they can take care of our customers and communities where we live, work, and play.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Cloud Data Engineer passionate about creating next-generation cloud-based products and services for the Department of War’s (DoW) Test & Evaluation (T&E) community. This role blends Cloud Architecture, Data Engineering, and DevSecOps to support the complete T&E data lifecycle—from test planning through evaluation and operational deployment.

The selected candidate will work onsite at the Redstone Test Center.

In this pioneering role, you'll architect and implement cloud-based solutions that transform how DoW collects, processes, analyzes, and visualizes test data. You'll work at the intersection of cutting-edge cloud technologies and mission-critical defense applications, directly impacting national security capabilities.

What You’ll Do

Cloud Architecture & Implementation (40%)

  • Design and implement scalable, secure data storage solutions on Azure cloud infrastructure.
  • Architect and deploy cloud services on DoD networks, navigating the Authority to Operate (ATO) process.
  • Implement infrastructure as code using Terraform to provision and manage cloud resources.
  • Ensure compliance with DoD security frameworks (RMF, NIST 800-53) including data encryption, access controls, and boundary protection.

Data Engineering & Pipeline Development (35%)

  • Develop and maintain robust data pipelines for ingestion, transformation, and distribution of large-scale datasets.
  • Implement automated data workflows using Azure Data Factory, Databricks, or similar platforms.
  • Optimize cloud data systems for performance, cost-efficiency, and reliability.
  • Create and maintain data flow diagrams, metadata catalogs, and lineage documentation

Technical Leadership & Collaboration (25%)

  • Translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences—from engineers to executive leadership.
  • Define product roadmaps and technical strategies aligned with customer mission needs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including program management, software developers, and test engineers.
  • Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices in cloud architecture and DevSecOps.

Requirements and Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with cloud platforms (Azure strongly preferred).
  • 3+ years designing and implementing data engineering solutions in production environments.
  • 2+ years working with DoW (formerly, DoD) or federal government systems and security requirements.

Technical Skills

  • Cloud Platforms: Proficient with Azure services (Storage, Data Factory, Databricks, Key Vault, Virtual Networks).
  • Infrastructure as Code: Hands-on experience with Terraform or similar tools (ARM templates, Bicep).
  • Programming: Proficiency in Python and/or PowerShell for automation and data processing.
  • Data Technologies: Experience with SQL, NoSQL databases, and big data frameworks (Spark, Hadoop, etc.).
  • DevSecOps: Practical knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, Git, and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • DoD/DoW Security: Demonstrated experience obtaining ATOs and implementing security controls on DoD/DoW networks.

Professional Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to present to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Self-motivated with ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

Clearance

  • U.S. Citizenship and an active Secret security clearance is required, with the ability and willingness to obtain TS/SCI clearance.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • Azure certifications: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104), Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203), or Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305).
  • Security certifications: Security+ (DoD 8570 IAT Level II), CISSP, GICSP, or GSEC.
  • Experience with Azure Government or Azure Government Secret cloud environments.
  • Background in T&E, modeling and simulation, or experimentation domains.
  • Experience with machine learning operations (MLOps) and AI/ML pipeline development.
  • Advanced Terraform skills including module development and state management.
  • Active TS/SCI security clearance.
