Position Overview The Customs Coordinator / Rater is responsible for providing support to the customs operations team, specifically in managing the processing of shipments and ensuring accurate tariff classification, valuation, and compliance with regulatory requirements. The role involves coordinating customs entries, managing relevant documentation, and supporting the seamless flow of goods through the customs clearance process. The Customs Coordinator / Rater plays an integral role in ensuring that all customs-related activities are processed efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with international trade laws.

Key Responsibilities Customs Documentation and Processing Assist in the preparation and submission of customs declarations, ensuring timely and accurate filing of import and export documents. Review and verify all customs paperwork, including invoices, packing lists, and other necessary documentation, to ensure compliance with regulations. Classify goods based on their tariff codes and assess the proper value for customs duty calculations.

Ensure all shipments are in full compliance with international, federal, and local customs regulations, including tariff codes, duties, and taxes. Coordinate with internal teams and external customs brokers to ensure a smooth customs clearance process. Compliance and Risk Management Assist in maintaining up-to-date knowledge of customs laws and trade regulations to ensure compliance with all applicable guidelines.

Ensure the accuracy of shipment data, customs entries, and duty assessments, reducing the risk of fines, delays, or disruptions. Track and report any discrepancies or errors in customs documentation and work to resolve them promptly. Ensure that all required export and import permits, licenses, and other compliance documents are in place.

Tariff Classification and Valuation Review shipments and classify goods according to the appropriate Harmonized System (HS) codes to determine duty rates and potential regulatory requirements. Collaborate with internal teams and clients to confirm the accuracy of product descriptions and value declarations to ensure proper duty assessment. Continuously assess tariff changes, working closely with senior customs personnel to stay compliant with evolving trade regulations.

Customer Service and Communication Serve as a point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders regarding customs procedures and documentation requirements. Assist customers in resolving customs-related issues by answering questions, providing guidance, and advising on tariff classifications or documentation needs. Communicate effectively with carriers, vendors, and customers to address any customs-related issues or delays.

Collaborate with the logistics and operations teams to ensure smooth coordination of shipments and customs processes. Data Entry and Record-Keeping Ensure that all customs-related data, including import/export entries, documentation, and clearance status, is entered accurately into the company's system. Maintain up-to-date and organized records of all customs documentation and communication for easy retrieval and audit purposes.

Provide regular reports on customs activities, including outstanding shipments, delayed clearances, or compliance issues. Process Improvement and Efficiency Support the team in identifying inefficiencies within customs processes and work with leadership to implement improvements. Propose process optimizations that can streamline customs procedures, reduce clearance times, and minimize administrative burden.

Ensure that all customs-related processes are well-documented, standardized, and continuously improved for greater efficiency. Collaboration and Support Work closely with internal teams, including logistics, operations, and sales, to ensure smooth flow and timely clearance of shipments. Assist senior customs coordinators and managers with any special customs projects or high-priority shipments as required.

Contribute to team training by sharing knowledge of tariff classification, compliance, and customs documentation. Support senior team members with reporting and analysis of customs-related performance metrics. Problem-Solving and Issue Resolution Resolve discrepancies in shipment data, tariffs, or classifications by collaborating with the team and external partners.

Address and resolve any issues that arise during the customs clearance process, including incorrect classification or misfiled documentation. Escalate complex customs issues to senior personnel when required for prompt resolution. Qualifications and Experience Education and Licensing Associate degree or higher in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field (preferred).

Basic understanding of trade compliance, customs regulations, and the Harmonized System (HS) tariff codes (required). Relevant certifications in customs brokerage, logistics, or freight forwarding (preferred but not required). Professional Experience Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in customs coordination, logistics, or supply chain management.

Familiarity with import/export documentation, customs procedures, and regulatory compliance requirements. Strong understanding of the Harmonized System and tariff classification. Skills and Competencies Attention to detail and accuracy, particularly in data entry and document verification.

Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Basic knowledge of customs clearance software and logistics management systems. Ability to work well independently and as part of a team, with strong communication skills.

Proactive problem-solving skills, with the ability to address issues efficiently and effectively.
