What is a data program manager?

A Data Program Manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating data-related projects and initiatives within an organization. They manage teams, set project goals, allocate resources, and ensure that data strategies align with business objectives. Their role often involves working closely with data engineers, analysts, and stakeholders to ensure data quality, compliance, and effective use of data assets. Data Program Managers also monitor project progress, address risks, and ensure the successful delivery of data programs on time and within budget.

What are some common challenges data program managers face when coordinating cross-functional data projects?

Data Program Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning priorities across different teams, ensuring data quality and consistency, and managing dependencies between technical and business stakeholders. Effective communication and stakeholder management are essential, as projects typically involve collaboration among data engineers, analysts, product managers, and executives. Balancing the need for timely delivery with rigorous data governance standards is another key challenge, requiring strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Program Manager, you need expertise in data analytics, program management, and a solid understanding of data governance, typically backed by a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), data visualization platforms (like Tableau or Power BI), and relevant certifications (e.g., PMP, Agile, or data management certifications) is often expected. Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills help drive cross-functional collaboration and align data initiatives with business goals. These competencies are crucial for successfully delivering data-driven projects, ensuring data integrity, and maximizing organizational value from data assets.

Job description

The work

Data Program Managers turn a collection of technical projects into one coordinated program that delivers. They align teams, funding, dependencies, schedules, risks, and decisions across data platforms, analytics, governance, software, and artificial intelligence initiatives where no single workstream can succeed alone.

The work is both strategic and intensely practical. Data Program Managers establish the operating rhythm, maintain an integrated view of scope and commitments, surface problems while options remain open, and give executives and delivery teams status they can trust. They understand enough of the underlying data and technology to test assumptions, challenge estimates, and recognize when a technical issue threatens the program's outcomes.

What you'll build

Integrated program plans that connect workstreams, milestones, dependencies, resources, and decision points.

Governance and delivery rhythms that keep owners, risks, issues, and commitments visible.

Benefits and outcome measures that show whether the program is producing mission value, not merely completing activity.

Risk, issue, and dependency practices that drive timely mitigation and precise escalation.

Executive reporting, working-level coordination, and durable documentation that keep a complex program coherent through change.

Who you are

You like complicated work when the complexity can be made legible. Your meetings end with decisions, owners, and dates, and your plans help people act rather than admire the planning.

You stay calm when several workstreams move at once. You can speak with engineers about delivery risk, with executives about outcomes and tradeoffs, and with stakeholders about what will happen next.

What you bring

A working foundation in program or project delivery across multiple teams, workstreams, or vendors.

Experience managing scope, schedules, resources, risks, issues, dependencies, and executive decisions.

Technical fluency in data, analytics, software, cloud, or artificial intelligence sufficient to assess delivery assumptions and consequences.

The ability to establish meaningful performance measures and connect project outputs to program benefits.

Clear written and oral communication, disciplined documentation, and sound judgment in regulated or mission-critical environments.
