What Are Data Privacy Jobs?

Data privacy jobs focus on helping a company manage and protect information. This has two primary focuses: company information and customer information. In these roles, you may study industry sources to evaluate potential risks, help ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and determine the best response to any violation of these rules. Data privacy jobs often involve using encryption to manage and store sensitive information, determining when or if to share information with others, and creating company policies to help ensure employees do not inadvertently violate privacy protection laws. Some industries—most notably healthcare—have additional data privacy requirements that you may be responsible for enforcing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Privacy professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Privacy professional, you need strong knowledge of data protection laws (like GDPR and CCPA), risk assessment, and compliance best practices, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications such as CIPP or CIPM. Familiarity with privacy management tools, data classification systems, and legal research databases is typically required. Attention to detail, ethical judgment, and effective communication are key soft skills for managing sensitive information and educating stakeholders. These skills ensure organizations remain compliant, protect customer trust, and mitigate the risks of data breaches.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in data privacy roles?

Professionals in data privacy roles often encounter challenges such as keeping up with rapidly changing regulations, ensuring organization-wide compliance, and balancing data protection with business needs. They frequently collaborate with IT, legal, and business teams to develop and implement privacy policies, manage data subject requests, and respond to potential data breaches. Staying informed about new technologies and emerging threats is also essential, making continuous learning a key part of the role.

What is data privacy?

Data privacy refers to the protection of personal or sensitive information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. It involves implementing policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure that individuals’ data is collected, stored, and processed in compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Data privacy professionals help organizations mitigate risks, maintain customer trust, and avoid legal penalties by ensuring proper handling of data. This field is especially important in industries that handle large volumes of personal information, such as healthcare, finance, and technology.

What jobs make $3,000 a month without a degree?

In data privacy, roles such as privacy analyst or compliance coordinator can sometimes earn around $3,000 monthly without requiring a degree, especially with relevant certifications like CIPP or CIPM. These positions often focus on data protection policies, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance, and may require strong analytical skills and knowledge of privacy laws. Experience and industry-specific skills can influence salary levels for these roles.

What is the difference between Data Privacy vs Data Security?

AspectData PrivacyData Security
FocusProtecting personal and sensitive information from misuse and ensuring compliance with privacy lawsSafeguarding data from unauthorized access, breaches, and cyber threats
CredentialsPrivacy certifications (e.g., CIPP, CIPM), knowledge of privacy lawsSecurity certifications (e.g., CISSP, CISM), technical security skills

Both roles are essential for comprehensive data protection but differ in their primary objectives and skill sets.

Job description

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Data & Audience Platform Manager to serve as the primary business and operational owner of our LiveRamp Clean Room and associated data partnerships. This individual will oversee the full lifecycle of audience management within programmatic media, govern end-to-end data flows, and ensure regulatory, financial, and data governance rigor. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with a strategic, entrepreneurial mindset-someone comfortable operating like a startup founder while maintaining impeccable accuracy, compliance, and operational discipline.
Key Responsibilities
Platform Ownership (LiveRamp):
  • Serve as the platform owner and main point of contact for LiveRamp, responsible for relationship management, roadmap alignment, escalations, and contractual obligations.
  • Lead end-to-end clean room data governance, ensuring data flows, permissions, entitlements, and workflows are compliant, complete, and auditable.

Data Operations & Governance:
  • Oversee daily data operations, including monitoring data feeds, troubleshooting issues, ensuring ingestion/data availability SLAs, and establishing new data pipelines.
  • Maintain rigorous financial management of the partnership-forecasting, budgeting, invoice review, and reconciliation.
  • Manage regulatory monitoring and reporting, ensuring adherence to privacy requirements (e.g., data sharing agreements, usage permissions, CCPA/other relevant policies).
  • Own documentation, process mapping, and compliance standards for all data-sharing workflows.

Audience Strategy & Execution (Programmatic Focus):
  • Build, deploy, and monitor programmatic audiences in partnership with the Channel Lead.
  • Develop and optimize audience strategies grounded in data insights, operational feasibility, and performance objectives.
  • Own the audience roadmap, including the development of new audience products, expansion of first-party data usage, and activation enhancements.
  • Provide hands-on execution expertise: audience creation, distribution, QA, troubleshooting, delivery monitoring, and reporting.

Data Monetization & Innovation:
  • Design and operationalize data monetization strategies, including new data products, partnerships, and clean room-based collaborations.
  • Identify opportunities to generate incremental value from existing data assets.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, tools, and partnerships to advance the clean room roadmap and audience sophistication.

Cross-Functional Leadership:
  • Collaborate closely with media, analytics, legal, privacy, engineering, and finance stakeholders.
  • Translate complex data workflows into clear business implications and opportunities.
  • Influence strategic decision-making through a deep understanding of data architecture, activation paths, and regulatory boundaries.

Qualifications
Required:
  • 8-10 years of experience in data-driven marketing, ad tech, digital media, or martech.
  • Direct, hands-on experience with LiveRamp (Safe Haven, Clean Room, Identity, or Activation).
  • Expert-level understanding of data flows, identity graphs, ingestion processes, and data-sharing contracts.
  • Proven experience in programmatic media, especially audience creation, segmentation, and activation.
  • Strong governance, compliance, and operational discipline; exceptional attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently own complex platforms or products.
  • Ability to manage budgets, vendor relationships, and platform contracts.
  • Experience working in agency, brand, or enterprise-level operational environments.

Preferred:
  • Experience leading data privacy or regulatory compliance processes.
  • Understanding of measurement, incrementality, or advanced analytics.
  • Product mindset: building roadmaps, identifying opportunities, and prioritizing enhancements.
  • Experience in high-growth or startup environments.

What Success Looks Like:
  • Clean room and LiveRamp environments consistently run with zero operational risk.
  • Audiences are executed with speed, precision, and measurable impact.
  • The organization relies on this role as the trusted expert on data governance and audience strategy.
  • Data monetization and partnership opportunities expand under your stewardship.
  • Processes are streamlined, predictable, and well-documented.

Education:
  • Bachelor's/University degree, Master's degree preferred
