What is data privacy?

Data privacy refers to the protection of personal or sensitive information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. It involves implementing policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure that individuals’ data is collected, stored, and processed in compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Data privacy professionals help organizations mitigate risks, maintain customer trust, and avoid legal penalties by ensuring proper handling of data. This field is especially important in industries that handle large volumes of personal information, such as healthcare, finance, and technology.

What is a data privacy job?

Data privacy jobs focus on helping a company manage and protect information. This has two primary focuses: company information and customer information. In these roles, you may study industry sources to evaluate potential risks, help ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and determine the best response to any violation of these rules. Data privacy jobs often involve using encryption to manage and store sensitive information, determining when or if to share information with others, and creating company policies to help ensure employees do not inadvertently violate privacy protection laws. Some industries—most notably healthcare—have additional data privacy requirements that you may be responsible for enforcing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data privacy professional?

To thrive as a Data Privacy professional, you need strong knowledge of data protection laws (like GDPR and CCPA), risk assessment, and compliance best practices, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications such as CIPP or CIPM. Familiarity with privacy management tools, data classification systems, and legal research databases is typically required. Attention to detail, ethical judgment, and effective communication are key soft skills for managing sensitive information and educating stakeholders. These skills ensure organizations remain compliant, protect customer trust, and mitigate the risks of data breaches.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in data privacy roles?

Professionals in data privacy roles often encounter challenges such as keeping up with rapidly changing regulations, ensuring organization-wide compliance, and balancing data protection with business needs. They frequently collaborate with IT, legal, and business teams to develop and implement privacy policies, manage data subject requests, and respond to potential data breaches. Staying informed about new technologies and emerging threats is also essential, making continuous learning a key part of the role.

What is the difference between Data Privacy vs Data Security?

AspectData PrivacyData Security
FocusProtecting personal and sensitive information from misuse and ensuring compliance with privacy lawsSafeguarding data from unauthorized access, breaches, and cyber threats
CredentialsPrivacy certifications (e.g., CIPP, CIPM), knowledge of privacy lawsSecurity certifications (e.g., CISSP, CISM), technical security skills
Work EnvironmentLegal, compliance, and policy-driven roles within organizationsIT, cybersecurity teams, technical environments

Data Privacy focuses on protecting personal information and ensuring compliance with privacy regulations, while Data Security emphasizes technical measures to prevent unauthorized data access. Both roles are essential for comprehensive data protection but differ in their primary objectives and skill sets.

What jobs are there in data privacy?

Jobs in data privacy include roles such as Data Privacy Officer, Data Protection Analyst, Privacy Compliance Manager, and Data Security Specialist. These positions involve developing privacy policies, ensuring compliance with regulations like GDPR or CCPA, and implementing data protection measures, often requiring knowledge of privacy laws, risk management, and security tools.

About Local Now

Local Now is a free, ad-supported streaming service delivering local news, weather, sports, and lifestyle programming to viewers across virtually every connected device. As part of Allen Media Group, we operate at meaningful scale across mobile, smart TVs, streaming sticks, set-top boxes, and the web. We are now investing in a ground-up rebuild of our streaming platform with a privacy-first architecture, modern shared-code strategy, and the engineering rigor needed to grow sustainably.

We build for audiences who expect frictionless playback on any device, and for advertisers who depend on us to deliver reliable, high-quality monetization. The work is tangible: every improvement we make is felt by millions of viewers.

The Role

We are hiring a Privacy Engineer to help build and coordinate the technical privacy posture of our streaming platform. This is fundamentally a full-stack software engineering role — one where a strong builder becomes the go-to owner of the privacy patterns, plumbing, and coordination work that make our platform trustworthy across every surface.

You do not need to have spent your entire career in privacy engineering to succeed here. What we need is a capable full-stack engineer who has worked meaningfully across backend and frontend systems, cares about doing right by users, and is energized by coordinating consent, data-handling, and compliance-adjacent work across a wide array of systems. Deeper privacy specialists are very welcome to apply — but the baseline is a solid full-stack engineer with a data-and-privacy lean.

What You Will Do

Build and evolve consent management plumbing across our client apps and backend services — consent capture, canonical representation, propagation to services and third-party SDKs, and honoring at the edges.

Contribute to the technical pipeline for data subject access requests (DSARs): intake, verification, fulfillment, and audit trail.

Help maintain a living data inventory: what personal data we collect, where it lives, how it flows, and who it is shared with.

Implement PII-handling patterns — data minimization, pseudonymization, retention, secure deletion — and help other engineers adopt them without needing to become privacy experts themselves.

Partner with the ad-tech and monetization stack to ensure advertising signal collection, ID resolution, and downstream sharing respect user consent and applicable regulations.

Review third-party SDKs and vendor integrations for privacy impact; recommend acceptance, mitigation, or replacement.

Coordinate with Legal and Compliance to translate regulatory requirements (CCPA/CPRA, GDPR, VCDPA, and emerging state privacy laws) into concrete engineering work and defensible technical controls.

Coordinate the privacy architecture across a wide array of systems — client apps, backend services, data pipelines, ad-tech, and vendor integrations — so that decisions in one place stay consistent everywhere else.

Instrument and monitor privacy signals in production; build the tooling that lets us catch drift early and prove our posture over time.

Serve as a practical advisor to feature teams so that privacy-by-design is realistic under delivery pressure.

What We Are Looking For

4+ years of full-stack software engineering experience shipping production code across backend and frontend systems.

Strong backend fundamentals — services, APIs, data pipelines, and storage — combined with practical frontend experience on CTV, web, or mobile.

Meaningful exposure to data privacy, security, or compliance-adjacent engineering work. This does not have to be your whole career, but it should be a real thread in it.

Ability to reason clearly about data flow across a distributed system: where PII enters, where it lives, where it moves, and where it leaves.

Working awareness of privacy regulations (CCPA/CPRA and GDPR at minimum) and an appetite to go deeper as the role grows.

Comfortable coordinating across engineering teams and with non-engineering partners (Legal, Compliance, Product).

A pragmatic disposition — you can advocate for the right privacy outcome while helping the business ship.

Nice to Have

Prior hands-on work with consent management platforms, DSAR workflows, or data-mapping / classification tooling.

Experience with privacy engineering platforms such as Fides, Ethyca, OneTrust.

Background in streaming, media, ad-tech, or another consumer-scale business where user data and monetization intersect.

Familiarity with connected TV and mobile SDK privacy behaviors — advertising ID handling, IDFA/AAID/RIDA, and platform-specific consent surfaces.

Privacy certifications such as IAPP CIPP/US, CIPP/E, or CIPT.

Comfort using AI-assisted development tooling to accelerate policy-to-code translation and data-inventory work.
