Job description

Job Purpose:

The Lead Voice/Data Technician is responsible for overseeing and executing structured cabling installations, ensuring all work is completed in accordance with project specifications, engineered drawings, and company standards. This role serves as the on-site lead for voice/data projects, providing direction to entry-level and journeyman technicians while coordinating closely with Project Managers. The Lead Technician demonstrates strong leadership, technical expertise, and a commitment to safety, quality, and efficiency, while driving successful project delivery from start to finish. The salary range for this position is between $28.00/hour - $35.00/hour, based on relevant education, experience, and other job related factors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and perform installation of structured cabling systems including copper, fiber optic, and pathway infrastructure
  • Supervise and direct field technicians, ensuring productivity, quality, and adherence to company standards
  • Interpret engineered drawings, blueprints, and specifications to ensure accurate installation
  • Coordinate daily jobsite activities, manpower, and material needs with Project Manager
  • Maintain accountability for jobsite safety, cleanliness, and organization
  • Oversee headend buildout, rack and stack, terminations, labeling, and grounding
  • Ensure all installations meet industry standards, codes, and customer requirements
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting of cabling systems, connectivity, and basic network issues
  • Manage jobsite materials, tools, and equipment, ensuring proper usage and security
  • Identify material shortages and coordinate procurement with warehouse or management
  • Conduct quality control checks and ensure all work meets company and manufacturer standards
  • Train, mentor, and develop junior technicians and installers
  • Maintain accurate documentation including daily reports, redlines, and closeout packages
  • Participate in scheduling, project planning, and coordination meetings as needed
  • Communicate effectively with Project Managers, customers, and other trades
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols, participate in toolbox talks, and enforce jobsite safety standards
  • Maintain punctuality, reliability, and professionalism at all times
  • Travel and work extended hours as required by project demands

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Advanced knowledge of structured cabling systems, including copper and fiber installations
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, schematics, and specifications
  • Proficient with testing equipment such as Fluke testers, fiber OTDR, and certification tools
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals including IP addressing, switches, and connectivity
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Education, License and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • 5+ years of experience in structured cabling or low-voltage construction (lead experience preferred).
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • Manufacturer installer certifications such as CommScope, Belden, Panduit, Corning, etc.
  • BICSI Installer 2, or Technician preferred.
  • Certifications from structured cabling manufacturers such as CommScope, Panduit, or Leviton.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Experience with fiber optic splicing and termination.
  • Extensive experience with testing and documentation of copper and optical fiber cables.
  • Experience building TR's including the installation of equipment racks, cabinets, ladder rack, grounding and bonding.
  • Layout and installation of multiple cable pathway structures.
  • Installing manufactured and installer fabricated Firestop materials.
  • Experience leading crews on commercial construction sites.
  • Experience leading crews in results oriented environments.
  • Familiarity with healthcare, data center, or large commercial environments
  • Experience with project documentation tools such as Procore or similar platforms

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires sitting, prolonged standing, walking, handling, gripping, pushing, pulling, and reaching overhead with force.
  • Requires stooping, crouching, crawling, and working on or under floors.
  • Ability to transport ladders up to 12 feet in height and lift ladders off vehicle roof racks.
  • Willing and able to climb and stand on ladders and scaffolding.
  • Frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds, including overhead.
  • Maintain a clear background check to satisfy customer jobsite badging requirements.

Travel Requirements:

  • 20-50% travel in Rocky Mountain Region, as needed.
