Job description
The Team
The Data Center Lab Technician is responsible for supporting the daily operations, maintenance, and growth of Hitachi Vantara's engineering lab and data center environments. This role performs hardware deployment, infrastructure support, equipment lifecycle management, and engineering lab operational activities supporting global product engineering, development, validation, and go-to-market initiatives.
The position works closely with infrastructure, storage, systems, network, and product engineering teams to ensure engineering lab environments remain operational, organized, secure, and available to support business objectives. This is a 100% onsite position located in Englewood, Colorado.
The Role
Data Center & Lab Operations
  • Install, rack, stack, cable, label, and decommission servers, storage arrays, network switches, SAN switches, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Perform equipment moves, adds, changes, and removals (MAC activities).
  • Maintain rack elevations, rack layouts, power allocation documentation, and equipment location records.
  • Assist with engineering lab capacity planning activities including rack space, power utilization, cooling considerations, and cable management.
  • Perform daily physical inspections of lab and data center environments.

Cabling & Connectivity
  • Install and maintain copper, fiber optic, Fibre Channel, and management network cabling.
  • Follow established cabling standards, labeling practices, and documentation requirements.
  • Troubleshoot physical connectivity issues and perform cable remediation activities.

Asset & Inventory Management
  • Maintain accurate inventory records for servers, storage systems, networking equipment, cables, optics, and spare parts.
  • Track equipment through its lifecycle from receiving through deployment and eventual retirement.
  • Support audits, asset reconciliation activities, and hardware refresh programs.
  • Manage engineering lab spare parts inventory.

Shipping, Receiving & Logistics
  • Receive, inspect, and stage incoming equipment.
  • Coordinate domestic and international shipments of engineering hardware.
  • Package and prepare equipment for return, repair, recycling, or redeployment.
  • Coordinate with vendors, logistics providers, and internal teams regarding equipment movement.

Operational Excellence
  • Create and maintain operational procedures, installation guides, and technical documentation.
  • Update Jira Service Management (JSM) tickets and maintain accurate work records.
  • Participate in process improvement and lab standardization initiatives.
  • Support after-hours maintenance windows and critical infrastructure activities as required.

What You'll Bring
  • Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Electronics, or related field preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a data center, engineering lab, infrastructure operations, or technical support environment.
  • Experience installing and supporting enterprise servers, storage arrays, and networking equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Ethernet, Fiber Channel, and fiber optic cabling standards.
  • Basic understanding of:
    • Networking fundamentals
    • Windows and Linux operating systems
    • VMware virtualization environments
    • Data center power and cooling concepts
  • Experience using ticketing systems such as Jira Service Management, ServiceNow, or equivalent.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and install equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a data center environment for extended periods including standing, bending, climbing ladders, and working in confined rack spaces.

Preferred Qualifications
  • CompTIA A+, Network+, Server+, or equivalent certification.
  • Experience with enterprise storage platforms.
  • Experience with VMware, Hyper-V, or cloud infrastructure platforms.
  • Experience with asset management systems and inventory tracking.
  • Basic scripting or automation experience (Python, PowerShell, Bash).
  • Experience supporting engineering lab or product development environments.

As required by the equal pay and transparency acts, the expected base salary for this position is: $55K to $100K. Expected on-target earnings: $60K to $110K.
The expected pay is determined based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, depth of experience in the practice area. Employees are eligible to participate in Hitachi Vantara's bonus/variable/commission pay programs, where applicable, and are subject to the program's conditions and restrictions.
