How much do data ingestion jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 6, 2026, the average yearly pay for data ingestion in the United States is $126,123.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $102,000.00 and $159,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a data ingestion job?

A data ingestion job involves collecting, importing, and processing data from various sources into a data storage or processing system. Data engineers or analysts typically design and run these jobs using tools like Apache NiFi, Kafka, or cloud services to ensure data is available for analysis or further processing.

What are some common challenges faced in a data ingestion role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working in data ingestion often encounter challenges such as handling diverse data formats, ensuring data quality, and maintaining data pipeline reliability. Managing large volumes of data from multiple sources can lead to issues with consistency, latency, and error handling. To address these, it is essential to implement robust validation processes, use scalable data ingestion tools, and closely collaborate with data engineering and source system teams. Continuous monitoring and regular pipeline optimization are also key practices to ensure smooth data flow and integrity.

What is data ingestion?

Data ingestion is the process of collecting and importing data from various sources into a storage or processing system, such as a database, data warehouse, or data lake. It involves transferring raw data, which may come from different formats and platforms, into a centralized location for analysis and further processing. Data ingestion can be done in real-time (streaming) or in batches, depending on business needs and data velocity. This process is crucial for organizations to make informed decisions based on comprehensive, up-to-date information.

What is the highest paying job in data?

In data-related fields, senior roles such as Data Engineering Managers, Data Architects, and Chief Data Officers tend to have the highest salaries, often exceeding six figures annually. These positions typically require extensive experience, advanced technical skills, and knowledge of tools like cloud platforms and data management systems.

What is the difference between Data Ingestion vs Data Analyst?

AspectData IngestionData Analyst
Required CredentialsKnowledge of ETL tools, SQL, basic scriptingDegree in statistics, data science, or related field; SQL, Excel, visualization skills
Work EnvironmentData engineering teams, IT departments, cloud platformsBusiness units, analytics teams, reporting environments
Industry UsageData pipelines, data warehouses, big data platformsData interpretation, reporting, decision support

Data ingestion involves collecting and importing data into storage systems, focusing on data pipelines and infrastructure. Data analysts interpret and analyze this data to generate insights. While data ingestion prepares data for analysis, data analysts focus on understanding and communicating data findings. Both roles are essential in data-driven organizations but serve different functions within the data lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Ingestion Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Ingestion Specialist, you need a strong understanding of data pipelines, ETL processes, and experience with databases, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as Apache Kafka, Apache NiFi, SQL, and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure is typically required, along with knowledge of data integration frameworks. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial to ensure the accurate, efficient, and secure movement of data across systems, supporting reliable analytics and business decisions.

Is data ingestion the same as ETL?

Data ingestion is the process of collecting and importing data from various sources into a storage system, while ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) is a specific data pipeline process that involves extracting data, transforming it for analysis, and loading it into a target system. Data ingestion can be part of an ETL workflow but also includes simpler or different data collection methods. In a data ingestion role, familiarity with ETL tools and processes is often essential.

What skills are needed for data ingestion?

Data ingestion roles require skills in data processing, scripting languages like Python or SQL, and familiarity with data integration tools such as Apache NiFi or Talend. Knowledge of database management, data formats, and basic understanding of cloud platforms like AWS or Azure are also important for efficient data pipeline development.

Job description

The Manager, Ingestion is responsible for operational ownership of all POCN, CMS, and other external partner audience data ingestion workflows. This role ensures that partner data is received, validated, standardized, processed, and delivered reliably into downstream systems. The role manages day to day ingestion operations, supports partner onboarding, troubleshoots ingestion issues, oversees file layout requirements, and ensures the quality and compliance of all partner audience datasets. The position serves as both a technical operator and a coordination point between partners, Product, Engineering, and internal Data Management teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Partner Data Ingestion Ownership (POCN, CMS & Others)
• Manage end to end ingestion workflows for all partner audience datasets, including POCN and CMS data.
• Oversee receipt, validation, formatting, and transformation of incoming partner files.
• Ensure consistent mapping, schema alignment, crosswalk logic, and metadata requirements.
• Maintain ingestion calendars, delivery expectations, and refresh cadences for each partner.
2. Partner Coordination & Onboarding
• Serve as the primary operational contact for POCN, CMS, and additional partners.
• Clarify file specifications, expected record counts, naming conventions, data definitions, and technical requirements.
• Manage testing cycles, lower environment ingestion setup, and pre production data validation.
• Communicate ingestion readiness, blockers, and risks to internal and external stakeholders.
3. File Standards, Quality Assurance & Validation
• Ensure partner files meet established standards for schema, layout, naming, and delivery process.
• Perform quality checks on incoming data to validate record counts, completeness, formatting, and taxonomy alignment.
• Partner with internal QC resources to investigate anomalies or ingestion breaks.
• Maintain documentation for partner file specifications and ingestion processes.
4. Operational Process Management
• Manage the ingestion ticket queue, ensuring timely triage, prioritization, and SLA compliance.
• Develop repeatable ingestion workflows and update runbooks and documentation as processes evolve.
• Track ingestion performance and escalate data issues or technical failures.
• Support the build of ingestion warm up processes, testing workflows, and launch plans for major partner integrations.
5. Cross Functional Collaboration
• Coordinate with Product, Engineering, and internal Data Management teams to support ingestion related features, requests, or roadmap needs.
• Collaborate with audience modeling, activation, email operations, and measurement teams to ensure partner data flows are synchronized downstream.
• Align with internal intake processes to ensure partner ingestion is prioritized correctly within broader Data Management workflows.
6. Continuous Improvement & Scaling
• Identify automation opportunities across ingestion workflows.
• Recommend improvements to reduce manual processing and enhance ingestion reliability.
• Contribute to establishing standard practices across all partner ingestion pipelines.
• Assist leadership in planning for future partner integrations and data expansions.
Qualifications
• 4-6+ years of experience in data ingestion, ETL/ELT operations, data onboarding, or similar data operations roles.
• Proficiency with SQL, Snowflake (or similar cloud warehouses), file validation, and schema management.
• Strong understanding of data file formats, taxonomies, crosswalks, and mapping logic.
• Excellent communication and relationship management skills, especially with external partners.
• Ability to manage multiple ingestion workflows simultaneously, meeting SLAs and quality expectations.
• Familiarity with intake/ticketing systems (e.g., Workfront) preferred.
• Ability to interpret record counts, identify anomalies, and troubleshoot data inconsistencies.
