POSITION SUMMARY:
The Oncology Data Specialist performs case finding, abstracts case information, performs follow-up procedures, and data entry. They assist in compiling registry data for the State and the National Cancer Data Bases and following registry standards set by the State, SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program), and the American College of Surgeons and AJCC (American Joint Committee on Cancer).
EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:
Minimum:
Two years experience in computer software programs: Word, Excel, and Internet access and use
Associates degree or equivalent (60 college level credits)
One year of experience in a Cancer Registry
Desired:
BS/BA degree in health sciences or related field Formal training in decision support, databases spreadsheet, report writer, query/relational database computer software applications
Experience with Microsoft Access and Power Point
One year experience with CNExT
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS:
Minimum:
Oncology Data Specialist (ODS)
SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:
Knowledge of California Standards Volume 1, Standards for Oncology Entry (STORE) and SEER Program Coding and Staging Manual. Working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy. Analytical and grammatical skills are necessary to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. Must have creativity, initiative, and critical thinking skills. Must show sensitivity for the patient and maintain strict confidentiality. Must be able to work independently and pay close attention to detail. Must be self-motivated, flexible and able to effectively work with multidisciplinary teams. Skilled in the collection and analysis of data and assessing its integrity. Must be capable of using Cancer Registry database and ability to learn regulatory requirements of the position. Proficient at Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook (Microsoft Office Suite) and the Internet, to provide a variety of computer skills for support functions. Organizational and multi-tasking skills are essential. Must be able to fulfill the essential functions of the position.
