Tehama County is seeking a hands-on, customer-focused IT professional to play a key role in supporting and improving technology services across the organization. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys solving problems, working directly with users, and working across a broad technology stack, including endpoints, servers, networking, storage, and cloud platforms such as Microsoft 365 and Azure, to deliver reliable and secure IT services in a public sector environment.
This role combines advanced technical support, systems administration, and operational improvement, with the opportunity to help shape how IT services are delivered across the County. You'll work closely with IT leadership to implement and support infrastructure and cloud solutions, improve processes, and ensure stable, secure operations across core systems that enable critical public services.
Examples of Duties
Examples of Duties May Include, But Are Not Limited To: Under general direction, the Senior IT Service Operations Engineer performs advanced technical and administrative tasks focused on service desk operations, ticket resolution, and the deployment of IT solutions. Responsibilities include responding to and resolving service desk tickets for IT systems, hardware, and software; providing technical support for workstations, printers, mobile devices, and peripherals; and training and guiding end-users on technology systems, applications, and best practices.
The position deploys, configures, and maintains desktops, laptops, mobile devices, and County applications, ensuring compatibility and functionality to meet user needs. Duties also include managing user accounts and supporting secure identity and access management processes, including provisioning, password resets, and permission updates. The incumbent monitors, maintains, and troubleshoots IT systems to ensure optimal performance and utilizes monitoring and alerting tools to proactively address system performance and security issues.
This role participates in the design, development, and implementation of infrastructure solutions, including servers, storage, networking, and cloud services, and supports efforts to automate infrastructure deployment, monitoring, and performance optimization. The position collaborates with County departments and stakeholders to deliver effective technology solutions and coordinates with contractors, vendors, and service providers to meet project and service requirements.
Additional responsibilities include providing advanced technical support for platforms such as Active Directory, Microsoft 365, networking, security, and virtualization technologies; preparing and maintaining technical documentation, project specifications, and operational reports; ensuring accurate technology inventory of hardware and software assets; maintaining clear and effective communication with stakeholders and end-users; ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction; staying current with evolving technologies and best practices; and identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiency and service delivery.
Knowledge Of: Principles and practices of infrastructure design and delivery, contemporary IT standards, and operational and IT infrastructure management; physical and cyber security policies, standards, and procedures; hardware and software platforms and system administration, including Microsoft Windows Server and Linux operating systems; server virtualization technologies such as Hyper-V; cloud delivery platforms and technologies, including Microsoft Azure; backup and disaster recovery solutions; networking concepts including DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, and network topologies; Active Directory, Azure Active Directory, group policies, and identity management technologies; Microsoft 365 productivity and collaboration tools; and IT service delivery frameworks such as ITIL and ITSM.
Skill In: Designing, installing, integrating, maintaining, and diagnosing data center, cloud, and infrastructure systems; automating delivery of infrastructure services; project management and agile delivery; operating modern computer systems and related software; and exercising independent judgment and decision-making based on established policies and procedures.
Ability To: Analyze complex technical problems and develop effective solutions; troubleshoot, repair, and recover from hardware and software issues; identify root causes and implement corrective and preventative measures; perform systems administration tasks on servers, storage systems, and infrastructure applications; implement new IT solutions and services; plan, organize, and prioritize tasks; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; prepare clear and accurate documentation and reports; provide effective customer service; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with technical and non-technical stakeholders, including County departments, vendors, and the public.
Education, Experience & Licenses
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or closely related field. Two (2) years of related professional experience may account for a single year of education
  • A minimum of four (4) years of professional experience working in an Information Technology engineering, design or support role.
  • At least two (2) years of professional experience working in a senior-level network, server, storage, or cloud compute engineering role.
License & Special Requirements:
  • Requires a valid California driver's license.
  • Must maintain an active CJIS Security (Advanced) certificate
  • Must adhere to County policies for handling sensitive information.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background check, including a California Department of Justice/FBI fingerprint and criminal history check.

Certification in following areas preferred:ITIL Foundations or advanced certifications, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals or related certifications, CompTIA certifications (e.g., Network+, Security+, Server+), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or higher, Certifications in scripting or automation tools (e.g., PowerShell).

The department is recruiting for one (1) vacancy.
In addition, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future vacancies for a Senior IT Service Operations Engineer, as well as subsequent vacancies, which occur during the life of the eligibility list.
New employees should anticipate being hired at the beginning step of the salary range. Candidates who exceed entry level qualifications may be considered, with approval from the Board of Supervisors, for placement at other than A step.

SALARY:
  • Annual salary step increases based upon satisfactory performance and completion of one year of employment (Step A to E).

HEALTH:
  • Approximately 80% of the premium for medical, dental, and vision plan is paid by the County (EPO Plan). The plan covers the employee and all eligible dependents at NO ADDITIONAL COST!
  • Employee premiums are $234.54 per month as of January 1, 2025 and $266.97 as of January 1, 2026 for employee and all eligible dependents.

PAID LEAVES:
  • Benefits also include an annual paid leave plan of
    • 96 hours of vacation (increases upon continuous years of service)

LIFE INSURANCE:
  • Approximately 80% of the premium for a $30,000 life insurance plan for the employee is paid for by the County.
