What is a data engineer relocation?

A Data Engineer Relocation refers to the process of a data engineer moving to a new city, state, or country for a job opportunity. Often, companies offer relocation packages or assistance to help data engineers with the costs and logistics of moving. This can include covering moving expenses, temporary housing, and support for settling into a new location. Relocation is common in the tech industry due to the high demand for skilled data engineers in specific regions or at company headquarters.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer, you need strong skills in data modeling, ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or SQL, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with big data platforms (like Hadoop or Spark), cloud services (such as AWS or Azure), and relevant certifications are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate effectively and adapt to evolving data needs. These skills ensure robust data pipelines, reliable analytics, and support for organizational data-driven decision-making.

What are some common challenges data engineers face when relocating for a new position?

When relocating for a data engineering role, professionals often encounter challenges such as adapting to new data privacy regulations, integrating with local teams, and understanding company-specific data infrastructure. Adjusting to a different work culture and collaborating across time zones can also require flexibility and strong communication skills. Proactively seeking support from HR and technical onboarding resources can help ease the transition and ensure a smooth start in the new environment.

Job description

Do you believe data tells the real story? We do! Redefining mobility requires quality data, metrics and analytics, as well as insightful interpreters and analysts. That's where Global Data Insight & Analytics makes an impact. We advise leadership on business conditions, customer needs and the competitive landscape. With our support, key decision makers can act in meaningful, positive ways. Join us and use your data expertise and analytical skills to drive evidence-based, timely decision making.

The Global Data Insights and Analytics (GDIA) department is looking for qualified individuals who can develop scalable solutions to complex real-world problems using Generative AI, Agentic Workflows, Machine Learning, and Statistics. Our goal is to drive evidence-based decision-making by providing insights from data across various domains, including Connected Vehicle, Smart Mobility, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Warranty Analytics.

In this position...

As a Data Scientist, you will play a critical role in leveraging data science to drive significant business impact. You will lead the development of Agentic AI applications and traditional ML models, building intelligent systems that can reason through complex scenarios while also providing predictive and prescriptive insights.

You will be responsible for architecting solutions that are not only intelligent but safe, observable, and robust. You will bridge the gap between modern Large Language Models (LLMs) and traditional statistical techniques, ensuring that AI agents operate within strict guardrails and are backed by rigorous data analysis.

Based in Dearborn, MI, this is a hybrid position with a required four-day onsite presence each week.  Relocation assistance may be available for qualified candidates.

You'll have...

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Computer Science, AI, Statistics, Mathematics, or Engineering) or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

  • 3 + years of professional experience in Data Science, with a strong dual focus on Generative AI/LLM applications and traditional Machine Learning.

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with supervised/unsupervised learning and statistical modeling.
  • 1+ years of experience building Agentic workflows (reasoning loops, tool use/function calling) rather than simple chatbots.
  • 1+ years of experience with the GCP stack for AI/Data (Vertex AI, BigQuery).

Even better, you may have...

  • Master's or PhD in a quantitative field (e.g., Computer Science, AI, Statistics, Mathematics, or Engineering).
  • Technical skills including:

    • Advanced proficiency in Python libraries such as Scikit-learn, NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.
    • Skilled in integrating diverse data sources via SQL, Vector Databases, and APIs. Experience with data augmentation and efficient loading techniques.
    • Expert proficiency in Python for building autonomous agents and model interaction (e.g., LangGraph, LangChain, Google ADK).
    • Proficiency in observability frameworks, guardrail implementation, and the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
    • Deep experience with GCP services, specifically Vertex AI, Cloud Run, and BigQuery for deploying scalable AI solutions.
  • Functional Skills including:
    • Ability to decompose complex business challenges into executable AI agent workflows and technical specifications.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to translate complex technical information into simple, understandable language for non-technical audiences.
    • Strong skills in building relationships and collaborating effectively with stakeholders to contribute to data-driven decision-making.
    • Highly effective in working with other technical experts, Software Engineers. Product Managers, Data Engineers, and business stakeholders

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!

As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home? Will your career be a deep dive into what you love, or a series of new teams and new skills? Will you be a leader, a changemaker, a technical expert, a culture builder...or all of the above? No matter what you choose, we offer a work life that works for you, including:

  • Immediate medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage
  • Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, subsidized back-up childcare and more
  • Family building benefits including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement, fertility treatments, and more
  • Vehicle discount program for employees and family members and management leases
  • Tuition assistance
  • Established and active employee resource groups
  • Paid time off for individual and team community service
  • A generous schedule of paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year's Day
  • Paid time off and the option to purchase additional vacation time

This position is a salary grade of 7 or 8 and ranges from $99,600- 192,900.

Final determination of salary grade will be based on candidate's skills and experience, and base salary will be set within the applicable range according to job scope, responsibility and competitive market value.
