Job description

IDEXX is seeking a Principal Data Architect that will drive the vision for the VetSoft Analytics Team's data architecture and lead the team that builds it. You will own how data moves from source systems through our pipelines and transformation layer into curated, reporting-ready data products that power executive dashboards, self-service analytics, and AI agents. Partnering with stakeholders in Product, Engineering, Sales, Marketing, and Finance, you will set the standards, patterns, and governance that make VetSoft data trustworthy, performant, and cost-efficient at scale.

Why this role matters:

Your architecture decisions won't just move data, they'll shape how confidently our leaders, sales, and product teams can act on it. As the technical backbone of the VetSoft Analytics Team, the standards and models you set will support every dashboard, self-service report, and AI agent across the business. You'll have the rare opportunity to build this practice from a position of real influence, growing a team while your work directly powers how IDEXX serves veterinary practices and pet owners worldwide.

In this Role

  • Oversee the end-to-end data pipeline (ELT) landscape, from ingestion of disparate source systems through orchestration, scheduling, and monitoring, ensuring reliability and timely delivery.

  • Lead the design and build-out of the transformation layer in dbt, establishing modular, tested, and well-documented models along with conventions for structure, testing, and deployment.

  • Design and deliver curated, reporting-ready data sets that BI tools (Sigma) and AI agents can query with confidence, with consistent business definitions, documented grain, and dependable semantics.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to understand business workflows and translate requirements into conceptual, logical, and physical data models that scale with growth and change.

  • Establish and enforce engineering standards for the data platform, including code review, version control, CI/CD, automated testing, and documentation.

  • Own data governance initiatives across the organization, including metadata management, data lineage, data quality monitoring, and PII policies, so stakeholders can access trustworthy, compliant, well-documented data assets.

What you will need to succeed:

  • The ideal candidate will have 7+ years of experience in data engineering, data warehousing, or data architecture, including demonstrated success leading and developing engineering teams.

  • Expert-level SQL skills and hands-on experience building transformations in dbt, with strong data modeling ability across relational, semi-structured, and unstructured data sets.

  • Deep experience with cloud data warehousing platforms (Snowflake strongly preferred), modern ELT and orchestration tooling, and the performance tuning and compute cost optimization that keep them efficient. Python or an equivalent scripting language is a plus.

  • A proactive, ownership-oriented mindset with excellent organizational and project management skills, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

What you can expect from us:
Base annual salary target: $115,000 - $157,000 (yes, we do have flexibility if needed)
Opportunity for annual cash bonus
Health / Dental / Vision Benefits Day-One
5% matching 401k
Additional benefits including but not limited to financial support, pet insurance, mental health resources, volunteer paid days off, employee stock program, foundation donation matching, and much more!
