What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer, you need a solid understanding of data modeling, SQL, and programming languages such as Python or Java, often backed by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with data warehousing solutions (like Amazon Redshift or Snowflake), ETL tools, and cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and clear communication are vital soft skills for integrating complex data systems and working with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure that data pipelines are reliable, scalable, and effectively support business intelligence and analytics needs.

What are some common challenges Data Engineers face when integrating data from multiple sources?

Data Engineers often encounter challenges such as inconsistent data formats, varying data quality, and differing update frequencies when integrating data from multiple sources. Ensuring data integrity and designing robust ETL pipelines that can handle these discrepancies is a key part of the role. Collaboration with data analysts, database administrators, and source system owners is crucial to resolve data mapping issues, automate data validation, and maintain reliable data flows within the organization.

What are Data Engineers?

Data Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain the systems and infrastructure that allow organizations to collect, store, and analyze large amounts of data. They create data pipelines, ensure data quality, and optimize data flow between systems, making it accessible for data scientists and analysts. Data Engineers often work with technologies like SQL, Python, Hadoop, and cloud platforms, and play a crucial role in supporting data-driven decision-making within organizations.

What is the difference between Data Engineer Data vs Data Analyst?

AspectData Engineer DataData Analyst
Primary RoleBuilds and maintains data pipelines and infrastructureAnalyzes data to generate insights and reports
Skills & CertificationsSQL, Python, ETL tools, cloud platformsSQL, Excel, data visualization tools
Work EnvironmentData engineering teams, IT departmentsBusiness units, analytics teams
Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare, any data-driven industryMarketing, finance, operations, business intelligence

While Data Engineer Data focuses on creating and managing data infrastructure, Data Analysts interpret this data to support decision-making. Both roles require strong SQL skills, but Data Engineers typically work more with data pipelines and cloud platforms, whereas Data Analysts focus on data visualization and reporting.

Our Department: Field Systems

Data/Analytics Engineer - Customer 360 Data Pipelines

About the Team: The Field Systems Data Team at Trimble is actively building and maturing our data strategy. We are seeking a dedicated Data Engineer to join our Business Intelligence team and actively shape our data backend and infrastructure in a dynamic environment, proactively breaking down data silos.

The Role: As a Data/Analytics Engineer, you will take on central tasks in our critical data projects and in the technical communication with the data platform team. Your efforts will be crucial for building a comprehensive 360-degree customer view, managing the growing demand for insights, and enhancing the overall quality and effectiveness of our data analysis.

What You Will Do: As a Data/Analytics Engineer in this permanent role, you will join our data analytics team to drive the evolution of our data platform and execute critical data projects:

Data Architecture and Platform Evolution (Snowflake/BI tools)

  • Lead or actively participate in the migration of data storage and ETL processes to Snowflake, integrating downstream with BI tools (including Domo).

  • Design and implement scalable data schemas, audit existing data flows, and ensure the integrity of core finance, marketing, product usage, and licensing datasets for analytics and reporting.

  • Establish necessary platform structures and contribute to knowledge transfer for new data platform components and logic, enabling effective consumption in BI tools.

Data Enrichment and Insight Development

  • Spearhead data quality and completeness initiatives by designing advanced record linkage and enrichment pipelines using Python and the Splink library.

  • Ensure comprehensive documentation and proper handover of new data enrichment ecosystems and processes.

  • Maintain and optimize SQL-based data extracts crucial for key business dashboards and reporting.

Advanced Analytics

  • Implement and deploy complex classification algorithms (currently prototyped in Python) within the production data environment (Snowflake).

  • Establish automated, incremental processes for algorithm execution and integration into the existing ETL/dashboard structure.

  • Support the integration and deployment of new data visualization and tooling solutions.

Third-Party Data Integration and Operational Data Quality (Impartner)

  • Collaborate with business teams (e.g., Sales Operations) to support the integration of critical third-party systems and data sources.

  • Implement and maintain data quality feature sets, including manual data cleanup, to ensure the reliability of data used for achieving production and business targets.

What skills & experience you should bring

Along with your excellent communication skills, stakeholder engagement, and ability to work independently or as part of a team, you will also have:

  • Proven experience as a Data/Analytics Engineer, ideally in a growing or evolving data environment.

  • Expert knowledge in Snowflake is required.

  • Very good Python programming skills are a must.

  • Experience with ETL processes and migrating from Domo (or similar BI platforms) to modern data warehouses.

  • Strong interest and focus on data backend and infrastructure topics.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and solve problems hands-on.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Knowledge of data governance and data quality best practices.
