Job description

Job Title: Electrical Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on the design and analysis of building electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, grounding, fire alarm, and low-voltage/data systems. The Electrical Engineer will lead electrical studies, provide technical guidance to clients, coordinate closely with other disciplines, and support construction administration and commissioning activities. This position also contributes to business development efforts and plays a key role in mentoring junior engineers while upholding high QA/QC standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design power distribution systems, including panelboards, feeders, and related infrastructure for building projects.
  • Design interior and exterior lighting systems, including lighting controls, to meet project performance and code requirements.
  • Design grounding and bonding systems to ensure safety, reliability, and code compliance.
  • Design fire alarm and low-voltage/data systems, integrating them effectively with overall building systems.
  • Perform electrical engineering studies, including load calculations, short-circuit analysis, protective device coordination, and arc-flash studies.
  • Act as a technical advisor during client meetings, clearly explaining design concepts and engineering decisions.
  • Define project scope, deliverables, and technical requirements in collaboration with clients and internal teams.
  • Oversee construction administration for electrical systems, including responding to RFIs and reviewing submittals and shop drawings.
  • Support commissioning activities, including field observations, system verification, and functional testing support.
  • Write clear and detailed observation reports documenting site visits, issues, and recommended actions.
  • Review contractors’ pay applications for accuracy and alignment with project progress and contract requirements.
  • Support proposals and business development efforts by contributing technical content, scope definitions, and level-of-effort estimates.
  • Coordinate closely with mechanical and plumbing teams to integrate electrical systems into the overall MEP design.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and designers to ensure cohesive, constructible, and code-compliant designs.
  • Mentor junior engineers, providing guidance on design tasks, calculations, software tools, and professional development.
  • Maintain and promote QA/QC standards by reviewing drawings, calculations, and documents for accuracy and consistency.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently, balancing priorities, deadlines, and client expectations.
  • Communicate effectively with internal team members, clients, and contractors throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Travel as needed (approximately 10–20%) for site visits, client meetings, and commissioning activities.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Kentucky.
  • At least 5 years of experience working in a consulting firm environment.
  • Strong experience in electrical engineering for building systems, including power distribution, lighting, grounding, fire alarm, and low-voltage/data systems.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for electrical design and documentation.
  • Proficiency with Revit and BIM workflows for MEP coordination and modeling.
  • Experience using electrical calculation tools for load, short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash studies.
  • Ability to serve as a technical advisor in client meetings and clearly communicate engineering concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Strong written communication skills for reports, documentation, and correspondence.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with clients, contractors, and internal teams.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10–20% for project-related needs.
  • Commitment to maintaining high QA/QC standards in all project deliverables.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license with the ability to maintain registration in Kentucky and potentially additional jurisdictions.
  • Experience working in a small or mid-sized consulting firm with exposure to a variety of project types and scales.
  • Familiarity with BIM-based coordination between electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and supporting their technical and professional growth.
  • Membership or affiliation with professional organizations such as IEEE or similar associations.
  • Interest in contributing to proposals and business development efforts.
  • Willingness to participate in continuing education and maintain professional development hours (PDHs).
  • Ability to adapt to flexible work schedules while maintaining core working hours and project commitments.

Work Environment

This role is based in an office environment with a small, close-knit team of approximately eight engineers. Each team member has their own dedicated office area rather than working in an open floor plan, allowing for focused, independent work as well as collaboration when needed. The firm offers flexible hours with core work times, and leadership works with employees to accommodate individual schedules where possible. The culture emphasizes teamwork, especially during periods of higher workload; when overtime is necessary, the team works together to complete projects efficiently rather than leaving individuals to manage it alone. The organization is a small firm that takes on large and complex projects, providing significant opportunities for professional growth and advancement. The work relies heavily on modern design technologies, including AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM tools, along with specialized electrical calculation software. Benefits include a 401(k) plan with employer matching and potential profit sharing, three weeks of paid time off per year, and comprehensive health coverage for single employees, with enhanced coverage for families after a period of full-time employment. The firm also provides free dental coverage for single plans, life insurance coverage, and access to long-term disability options. Professional support includes payment of state professional registration fees and fees for one professional affiliation, with employees responsible for their own professional development hours. The overall environment supports long-term career development, technical excellence, and collaborative project delivery.
