Job description

Mostly remote job except when you are on site which is about 50% of the time and can be in various locations in the US. Massively growing organization with great opportunities for growth.

Chris Preble from Robert Half is looking for an experienced Technical Director - Data Center to provide senior technical direction for complex facility environments. This role will guide engineering decisions across critical building systems, ensuring designs support uptime, resilience, and customer expectations. The position serves as a central technical leader from planning through delivery, helping teams align design intent, construction execution, and commissioning outcomes.

Responsibilities:

Own and manage the technical design basis and engineering strategy across the program.

Lead technical coordination across electrical, mechanical, controls, CSA, power infrastructure, white space and commissioning.

Translate customer requirements into coordinated design and construction deliverables.

Maintain technical governance of the Basis of Design, design criteria, specifications, drawings and technical standards.

Lead technical reviews and challenge consultants, designers, contractors and vendors where required.

Manage critical interfaces between behind-the-meter generation, electrical distribution, cooling infrastructure, building systems, white space and customer equipment.

Provide technical leadership across high-density power distribution and direct liquid cooling, including CDU and facility-water interfaces.

Ensure designs incorporate reliability, redundancy, maintainability, operational resilience and commissioning requirements.

Manage technical RFIs, design decisions, deviations, assumptions and engineering changes.

Assess technical changes for schedule, cost, constructability and operational impact before implementation.

Coordinate with the Programme Director so design releases and technical decisions support the overall master program.

Work with procurement/vendors to ensure major equipment selections and technical submittals meet requirements.

Support construction teams through technical resolution, installation, testing and system turnover.

Work with the Commissioning Lead to embed commissioning requirements into the design.

Identify and escalate technical risks affecting scope, schedule, cost, reliability or customer requirements.

Provide concise technical reporting and recommendations to senior leadership.

100MW+ hyperscale, AI/HPC or high-density data-center experience is strongly preferred, particularly programs incorporating major power infrastructure, liquid cooling, white-space deployment and integrated commissioning.

Strong multidisciplinary knowledge across electrical and mechanical data-center infrastructure.

Proven experience leading design and engineering on large-scale mission-critical projects.

Strong understanding of MV/LV distribution, redundancy architecture, protection, controls, cooling systems and high-density white-space infrastructure.

Experience with direct liquid cooling, CDUs and high-density AI/HPC environments strongly preferred.

Experience interfacing data centers with major utility, substation or behind-the-meter generation infrastructure highly advantageous.

Strong understanding of design management, technical governance, constructability and commissioning.

Ability to challenge engineering consultants, contractors and OEMs at a senior technical level.

Strong commercial awareness and understanding of the program and cost consequences of technical decisions.

Ability to operate effectively at both executive and detailed engineering level.
