A data center manager oversees computer systems and information for companies and organizations. As a data center manager, your responsibilities include backing up data, troubleshooting technical problems, communicating with staff and upper management, and supervising data center technicians. Qualifications vary for a career in data center management, but most employers require prior information technology experience and an associate degree or higher. Computer skills, customer service abilities, and experience with supervisory duties are also helpful in information management jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment for data center managers to increase in the coming decade.
| Aspect | Data Center Manager | Data Center Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications | Data Center certifications (e.g., CDCP, CCNA Data Center) | Technical certifications (e.g., CompTIA Server+, Cisco) |
| Work Environment | Oversees entire data center operations, management, and staff | Performs hardware installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting |
| Responsibilities | Strategic planning, capacity management, team leadership | Equipment setup, repairs, and technical support |
The Data Center Manager focuses on overseeing the entire data center operations, staff, and strategic planning, while the Data Center Technician handles technical tasks like hardware maintenance and troubleshooting. Both roles require technical knowledge, but the manager's role is more supervisory and strategic.
Data Center Operations Manager
Job OverviewThe Data Center Operations Manager is a hands-on leadership role responsible for the build-out and ongoing operation of a high-performance, enterprise-scale data center environment.
This role is designed for a working leader-someone who actively participates in day-to-day technical operations while leading a team of technicians and engineers to deliver reliable, high-quality outcomes. You will play a key role during the initial deployment phase, supporting infrastructure bring-up, commissioning, and operational readiness. As the data center transitions into steady-state operations, you will take ownership of site performance, team execution, and operational consistency.
This position combines technical depth with operational leadership, requiring a leader who is comfortable being on the floor solving problems while also setting priorities, coordinating work, and driving accountability across the team.
You will work closely with cross-functional infrastructure teams, vendors, and stakeholders, making clear and professional communication in English (written and verbal) essential for success in this role.
This role offers continuity across both deployment and operational phases and is part of a broader program focused on building a stable, high-performing infrastructure environment.
