What are some typical challenges a data automation engineer faces when integrating new automation tools into existing data pipelines?

Data Automation Engineers often encounter challenges related to compatibility and scalability when introducing new automation tools to established data pipelines. Legacy systems may have limitations that require creative solutions to ensure seamless integration without disrupting ongoing processes. Additionally, maintaining data quality and consistency during transitions is critical, as is collaborating with cross-functional teams—such as data analysts, IT, and software developers—to align on requirements and troubleshoot issues. Proactive communication and thorough documentation can help overcome these challenges and ensure successful automation implementation.

What is a data automation engineer?

Data Automation Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain automated systems to collect, process, and analyze data. They use programming, scripting, and various data tools to streamline data workflows, reduce manual intervention, and improve efficiency. Their work often involves building data pipelines, integrating data from multiple sources, and ensuring data quality and reliability. By automating repetitive data tasks, they help organizations make faster, data-driven decisions. Data Automation Engineers typically collaborate with data analysts, data scientists, and IT teams to support business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data automation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Automation Engineer, you need strong skills in programming (such as Python or Java), data integration, and database management, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with ETL tools, automation frameworks (like Apache Airflow), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is also essential, along with relevant certifications. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are key soft skills for identifying automation opportunities and collaborating across teams. These skills are crucial for designing efficient, scalable solutions that streamline data workflows and support business intelligence needs.

Job description

We’re innovators, changemakers, and collaborators. At every opportunity, we set the pace while delivering innovation built to carry real estate into the future. We create a world where every experience feels effortless, yet meaningful, and where customers are empowered to take on any opportunity. We show up as one team, connected by our values to be a force for good. Because together, we have the power to create extraordinary outcomes for our customers, our communities, and ourselves.
Your Impact
As the Staff Marketing Data & Automation Engineer, you will be a senior individual contributor responsible for designing and operationalizing applied AI capabilities within our Marketing and Go-To-Market workflows. Operating within enterprise data and automation standards, you will build scalable, AI-enabled systems that directly improve pipeline quality, targeting precision and conversion efficiency.
In this role, you will own the AI-powered data transformation layer, from initial prompt design and model integration to downstream activation into core revenue platforms like Salesforce and Marketo. You will serve as a subject matter expert, mentoring team members and elevating the collective output of the department by defining reusable AI design patterns.
Key Responsibilities
  • AI Solution Design: Translate Marketing OKRs into AI-enabled data workflows, designing systems for automated enrichment, summarization, and lead signal generation.
  • Architecture & Delivery: Implement AI workflows using enterprise frameworks (e.g., MCP) and evaluate model architectures—including RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) and agentic workflows—based on performance and cost-scalability.
  • Data Activation: Operationalize AI-enriched signals into our Snowflake data warehouse and activate them across the revenue stack, including Salesforce (CRM) and Marketo (MAP).
  • Governance & Quality: Establish human-in-the-loop controls and evaluation frameworks to monitor model drift, accuracy, and compliance with data privacy policies.
  • Strategic Leadership: Advise leadership on AI opportunity sequencing and ROI, while identifying automation capacity to quantify total operational impact.
Qualifications
  • Expertise in AI/LLMs: Significant hands-on experience building production workflows using LLMs (OpenAI, Anthropic) and Agentic AI frameworks.
  • Data Engineering Mastery: Advanced SQL and Python skills with deep experience working in cloud data warehouses like Snowflake or BigQuery.
  • System Integration: Proven ability to integrate external APIs (REST/SOAP) into operational data systems and revenue platforms.
  • Strategic Execution: Experience owning technical systems from initial experimentation through full-scale operationalization.
  • Collaborative Mindset: A track record of thriving in highly collaborative, cross-functional environments and mentoring junior engineers.
Preferred
  • Experience supporting Growth or Revenue Operations teams.
  • Familiarity with dbt for transformation and Airflow for orchestration.
  • Knowledge of specialized data acquisition tools like Firecrawl.
Compensation & Benefits
The compensation that we reasonably expect to pay for this role is: $152,000 - $190,000 [base pay]. The actual compensation for this role will be determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, education, experience, and internal equity.
