Job description

Responsible for patron service in the branch library, including circulating materials, providing reference assistance, presenting children's programming, and managing the branch in the absence of the branch manager or assistant branch manager.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
  • Manages branch in the absence of branch manager/assistant manager and serves as resource to subordinate personnel.
  • Provide circulation, reference, and reader's advisory services, and homework assistance.
  • Assists patrons with the use of the public computers, printers, and photocopiers.
  • Prepare cash reports, collect statistics, bulletin boards and other signage and perform opening and closing routines.
  • Maintains the collection by processing new materials and assist in shelving and shelf-reading
  • Prepares and presents children's programming in-house and in the community.
  • Orders supplies and voters registration supplies for the branch.
  • Pulls holds from holds list from the online catalog system and mail books to other libraries in Georgia.
  • Receives new periodicals and process them for circulation and maintains the collection.
  • Assists with the weeding of books, magazines, and other library materials.
  • Serves on staff and planning committees as required and perform other duties as required.

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE:
  • Responsible for patron service in the branch library.

Education: High School diploma or GED.
Experience: 2 years of previous library and customer service experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Considerable knowledge of functions, policies and procedures of the library system and automated circulation and cataloging systems (Dewey Decimal system, MARC cataloging formats, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and Boolean search techniques.)
  • Familiarity with library collections, reference sources and finding aids, and of currently popular materials.
  • Proficiency in presenting programs, troubleshooting, interpersonal relations, supervising and managing children and youth, and providing instructional assistance.
  • Knowledge of the Georgia Evergreen automated system, the Internet, Galileo, library-owned on-line and CD-ROM products and the Microsoft Office Suite.

Skills:
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Mastery of operating audio-visual equipment, standard office equipment, computers, and a large vehicle.

Certification:
  • None

Some positions may require:
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.

  • Verbal: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
  • Math: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

  • Physical Abilities: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
  • Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

TRAINING & SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
  • Two to five staff.
