How much do data assimilation jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for data assimilation in the United States is $33.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.79 and $42.55 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is data assimilation?

A Data Assimilation job involves integrating observational data with computational models to improve predictions and analyses in fields like weather forecasting, oceanography, and climate science. Professionals in this role use statistical techniques, machine learning, and numerical modeling to refine simulations based on real-world measurements. They work with large datasets, optimize model performance, and enhance decision-making in scientific and operational applications.

What does a data assimilation specialist do?

Professionals in Data Assimilation are often responsible for acquiring, processing, and integrating large observational datasets with numerical models to improve forecasts or analyses. A typical day may include coding and running assimilation algorithms, validating results, troubleshooting data issues, and collaborating closely with model developers, scientists, and data engineers. You may also participate in meetings to discuss project goals, model improvements, or the interpretation of results. This role requires balancing independent analysis with frequent teamwork to ensure data quality and model accuracy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in data assimilation?

To thrive in Data Assimilation, a solid foundation in applied mathematics, statistics, meteorology or related fields, typically supported by a relevant degree, is essential. Experience with data assimilation frameworks (like WRFDA or DART), programming languages (such as Python, MATLAB, or Fortran), and data management systems is highly desirable. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication foster success in cross-functional, research-driven teams. These combined skills ensure accurate integration of observational and model data, driving reliable forecasts and informed decision-making.

  • Developing code for ensemble-based data assimilation frameworks
  • Designing schema for processing remotely sensed ocean observations
  • Creating and testing algorithms for operational and research-grade ocean models
  • Conducting evaluation and validation of model enhancements
  • Publishing research in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific conferences

Qualifications
What You'll Need:
  • MS in Oceanography, Mathematics, Physics, or related field (PhD preferred)
  • Proficiency in Fortran, Python, and MATLAB
  • Experience with Linux, shell scripting, VSCode, and High-Performance Computing (HPC)
