Payment rates vary but are generally consistent with entry-level or freelance data labeling roles, and reliable platforms provide clear compensation terms before starting work.

What is a data annotation specialist?

Data Annotation Specialists are professionals who label and categorize data—such as images, text, audio, or video—to make it usable for machine learning models and artificial intelligence systems. Their work ensures that algorithms can accurately interpret data by providing clear examples of what different data points represent. Tasks may include drawing bounding boxes on images, transcribing audio, or tagging keywords in text. This role is crucial for improving the accuracy and reliability of AI applications across various industries.

What are some common challenges a data annotation specialist faces, and how can they be addressed?

Data Annotation Specialists often encounter challenges such as maintaining high accuracy while labeling large volumes of data, managing repetitive tasks, and understanding complex annotation guidelines. To overcome these, it's important to stay detail-oriented, take regular breaks to avoid fatigue, and seek clarification on ambiguous instructions. Collaborating with team members and participating in quality review sessions can also help ensure consistency and improve annotation quality over time.

About SME Careers

As AI systems become more sophisticated, they rely on human knowledge to better understand context and the world. SME Careers is a fast-growing AI Data Services company and subsidiary of SuperAnnotate, delivering training data for many of the world's largest AI companies and foundation-model labs. Your Catalan expertise directly helps improve the world's premier AI models by making their Catalan language output more natural, reliable, culturally accurate, and clearly written.

About the Role

In this hourly, remote contract role with flexible scheduling, you will work as a Catalan Language Specialist to create high-quality Catalan reference content and review AI-generated Catalan content, evaluating language quality and step-by-step reasoning while providing precise written feedback.

This role centres on authoring gold-standard Catalan material and judging model output against it. You will assess outputs for accuracy, fluency, grammar, spelling, tone, cultural appropriateness, and adherence to the prompt. You will identify errors in meaning, mistranslation, register (formal vs informal), ambiguity, regional variation, and logical consistency; fact-check claims when needed; write high-quality rewrites and model answers that demonstrate best practices in Catalan writing; and rate and compare multiple AI responses based on correctness and overall quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop AI Training Content: Create prompts and gold-standard Catalan answers across multiple domains, including general knowledge, customer support, education, conversational writing, translation, localization, and culturally sensitive content.
  • Author Model Answers: Write high-quality rewrites and reference answers that demonstrate best practice in Catalan writing, so models have a clear standard to learn from.
  • Optimize AI Performance: Evaluate and rank AI outputs to improve fluency, correctness, tone match, register consistency, meaning preservation, regional appropriateness, and cultural fit.
  • Handle Register and Regional Variation: Apply the right conventions across standard Catalan, Valencian, and Balearic usage, and across formal and informal address, depending on project requirements.
  • Ensure Model Integrity: Detect unsafe or misleading content, factual hallucinations, bias, mistranslations, ambiguity, policy-risk language, and culturally inappropriate phrasing; validate reliability across use cases.

Your Profile

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Linguistics, Catalan Philology, Catalan Literature, English Literature, Communications, Journalism, Translation, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Native or near-native Catalan proficiency, with strong reading and writing skills required.
  • Strong professional proficiency in English, minimum C1, to follow guidelines and provide detailed feedback in English.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in writing, editing, localization, translation, content QA, journalism, education, or related language-focused work.
  • Deep understanding of Catalan grammar, spelling conventions, punctuation, accents, pronouns, verb forms, idiomatic usage, tone, and style, and the ability to explain why something is wrong and how to fix it.
  • Comfortable handling multiple registers and regional variation, including standard Catalan, Valencian, Balearic usage, formal and informal Catalan, and Spain, Andorra, and diaspora audience expectations, depending on project requirements.
  • High attention to detail when spotting subtle meaning shifts, awkward literal translations, false friends, incorrect pronoun usage, hallucinated claims, Castilian-influenced phrasing, or culturally mismatched wording.
  • Reliable, self-directed, and able to deliver consistent quality in an hourly, remote contract workflow across time zones.
  • Prior experience with AI data training and annotation, translation QA, editorial QA, localization QA, or rubric-based evaluation is strongly preferred.
