Job description

Adjunct Faculty - BA 140 Business Analytics 1 - Data Visualization
About the Role

Ensign College is seeking an adjunct faculty member to teach Business Analytics 1 - Data Visualization within the Business Analytics Certificate program. This is a foundational course that introduces students to the principles and practice of data visualization for business decision-making. Students will learn to connect to data sources, transform and model data, build meaningful visualizations, and present findings through interactive dashboards - using both Power BI and Tableau as their primary tools.

Rather than training students on one platform, the goal is to develop visualization literacy: the ability to choose the right tool for the task, design for an audience, and tell a clear story with data. Students will gain hands-on proficiency in both Power BI and Tableau, learning to evaluate the strengths of each in different business contexts.

The ideal candidate brings both technical depth and teaching instinct. We're looking for someone who can help students think critically about what their data is telling them.

About Ensign College

Ensign College is an institution of higher education founded and sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The college's mission is to develop capable and trusted disciples of Jesus Christ. Students at Ensign learn through a "Prepare, Act, Demonstrate" framework designed to make them active agents in their own learning.

Faculty are expected to teach in a way that develops both professional capability and personal character. This means creating learning experiences that are practical, engaging, and grounded in real-world application.

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Deliver in-person instruction for Business Analytics 1 during assigned 7-week block sessions.

  • Teach data visualization principles that transcend any single tool: choosing chart types for different data stories, designing for clarity and audience, and evaluating whether a visualization supports sound decision-making.

  • Guide students through hands-on projects in both Power BI and/or Tableau, including data connection, transformation, calculated fields/measures, data modeling, and interactive dashboard design.

  • Help students understand when and why to use each tool, developing the judgment to select the right platform for a given business problem.

  • Supplement structured learning modules with live instruction, real-world datasets, and applied exercises that deepen understanding beyond tutorial-level replication.

  • Assess student work using established rubrics and provide timely, constructive feedback.

  • Create a classroom environment consistent with Ensign College's mission, where students are active participants in their learning.

  • Collaborate with the Program Chair on course design, assessment outcomes, and continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency in both Microsoft Power BI and Tableau, including data modeling, calculated fields/DAX, and dashboard design.

  • A master's degree in business analytics, data analytics, information systems, finance, or a related field.

  • Professional experience using Power BI, Tableau, or similar business intelligence tools in a business or organizational setting.

  • Ability to teach data visualization as a discipline - not just software mechanics - including visual encoding principles, audience-centered design, and data storytelling.

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to students with varying levels of prior experience.

  • Alignment with the mission and values of Ensign College and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300), Tableau Desktop Specialist, or Tableau Certified Data Analyst.

  • Prior teaching, tutoring, or corporate training experience - formal or informal.

  • Experience with adjacent tools in the data ecosystem (Excel, SQL, Python for data analysis, Azure).

  • Ability and willingness to contribute to course development. This is a redesigned course, and we're looking for someone who can help shape it - developing assignments, integrating real-world case studies, building a coherent dual-tool curriculum, and aligning the course with Ensign's "Prepare, Act, Demonstrate" learning model.

What Success Looks Like

A successful adjunct in this role doesn't just teach two tools side by side. They teach students to think visually about data. When I connect to a dataset, what questions should I be asking? When I choose between a bar chart and a scatter plot, what am I optimizing for? When I pick Power BI over Tableau for this project, or vice versa, why? When I present a dashboard to a manager, what story does the data tell, and what decision does it support?

Students who complete this course should leave with sufficient knowledge of both Power BI and Tableau to look at a dataset and make it speak clearly to the people who need to act on it.

Requirements for Employment Eligibility:

  • Membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  • Worthiness to hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend.

  • Receive clearance from the Church Educational System Ecclesiastical Clearance Office.

  • Strict adherence to company policies and procedures.

  • Commitment to bring about the purposes of Ensign College.

  • Reside in Utah and able to teach in person at our downtown Salt Lake City campus.
