Can a data analyst be a project manager?

A data analyst can transition into a project management role by developing skills in leadership, communication, and project planning. While data analysts typically focus on data interpretation and reporting, project managers oversee project execution, timelines, and team coordination, often requiring certifications like PMP. Combining technical expertise with project management skills can enable a data analyst to take on project management responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data analyst project manager?

To thrive as a Data Analyst Project Manager, you need expertise in data analysis, project management methodologies, and a relevant degree such as in statistics, computer science, or business. Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI), project management software (e.g., Jira, Asana), and certifications like PMP or CAPM are often required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills help you bridge technical teams and stakeholders while managing timelines and expectations. These abilities ensure that data-driven projects are executed efficiently, deliver actionable insights, and meet organizational goals.

The main difference is that a Data Analyst Project Manager combines project management with data analysis skills to lead data initiatives, while a Data Analyst primarily focuses on analyzing data and generating insights. The Project Manager role involves overseeing projects from start to finish, coordinating teams, and ensuring timely delivery, whereas the Data Analyst role centers on data interpretation and reporting.

How do data analyst project managers balance analytical work with project management responsibilities?

Data Analyst Project Managers often split their time between overseeing project timelines and deliverables, and performing or reviewing data analysis tasks. This dual focus means they must prioritize effective communication and delegation, ensuring that project goals are met while maintaining high standards for data quality and insights. Collaboration with data analysts, stakeholders, and other project managers is essential, as they often facilitate meetings, translate technical findings into actionable recommendations, and resolve obstacles that might affect the project's progress. Successfully managing both aspects requires strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt to shifting priorities.

Who earns more, a data analyst or a data analyst project manager?

A data analyst project manager typically earns more than a data analyst due to additional responsibilities, leadership duties, and project management skills. Salaries can vary based on experience, industry, and location, but project managers generally have higher compensation levels in data-related roles.

They are known to respect a traditional work week and often extend contracts for added job security and stability.

We are seeking a highly detail-oriented and experienced Data Analyst for a critical data transformation project. This role focuses on the migration of Benchmark (Index) and Security/Issuer Master data from a legacy system to a new data platform.

Unlike a pure engineering role, this position requires a high degree of business knowledge. The ideal candidate understands the complexities of financial reference data and can bridge the gap between technical migration and business utility. You will be responsible for ensuring the integrity of our data through rigorous cleanup, reconciliation, and UAT.

Responsibilities

  • Data Analysis & Cleanup:
    • Analyze large datasets of security and benchmark data (Equities, Fixed Income, Derivatives, Indices) to identify gaps, duplicates, and inconsistencies prior to migration.
    • Perform root-cause analysis on bad data and execute manual or bulk cleanup procedures.
    • Map data attributes between the legacy source system and the target platform, ensuring accurate translation of business logic.
  • Testing & Validation:
    • Lead the reconciliation process between the old and new platforms to ensure data parity.
    • Design and execute detailed test cases for security setup, pricing feeds, and benchmark composition.
    • Identify, log, and track data defects; work closely with the technical implementation team to resolve migration errors.
  • Business Support & Documentation:
    • Validate that the new platform meets the consumption needs of downstream systems and consumers.
    • Develop and document new processes and operational workflows.
    • Document data dictionaries, exception handling procedures, and operational controls.
    • Act as a subject matter expert (SME) for business users during the transition period.

Candidate

We are seeking a highly motivated Operations Analyst who can work independently on complex processes. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of financial products and valuation coupled with a strong background in data management, including experience with SQL, PowerApps, and Python.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in Data Operations, Data Governance, or Investment Operations within an Asset Manager or Hedge Fund.
  • Deep understanding of financial instruments (Equities, Bonds, Futures, Options) and Reference Data (Issuers, Corporate Actions, Ratings, Classifications).
  • Familiarity with major index providers (e.g., MSCI, S&P, Bloomberg, FTSE) and how benchmark data is structured (constituents, weights, returns).
  • Advanced Excel proficiency (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables) is required. Proficiency in SQL for data querying and analysis is highly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with accounting and valuation of various asset classes including structured products and derivatives
  • Experience with Accounting and Trading Systems; APX, CRD, Bloomberg
  • Experience with major EDM (Enterprise Data Management) platforms (e.g., GoldenSource, IHS Markit/S&P EDM, SimCorp).
