Job Description Summary

The Programmer/Research Analyst will support research initiatives using large scale healthcare data sources, including Medicare, Medicaid, SEER, NHANES, Optum, and electronic medical records. Working within the Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), this role contributes to federally funded projects supported by the National Cancer Institute and the National Library of Medicine, with a focus on cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship.
The analyst will design, build, and maintain analytic datasets; develop reproducible pipelines; and implement computational methods that enable effectiveness and cost effectiveness studies, precision public health research, and health services research. The role also offers opportunities to collaborate on multidisciplinary projects involving mixed methods research and the application of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) to population level and clinical outcomes.

Job Description:

The Programmer/Research Analyst will support research initiatives using largescale healthcare data sources, including Medicare, Medicaid, SEER, NHANES, Optum, and electronic medical records. Working within the Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), this role contributes to federally funded projects supported by the National Cancer Institute and the National Library of Medicine, with a focus on cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship.

Key responsibilities include developing highquality, welldocumented code; supporting manuscriptready analyses; contributing to presentations at national and international conferences; and participating in collaborative research teams. Team members are encouraged to pursue career development opportunities, with strong support from mentors and dedicated staff at HCC and MUSC.

Job Description:

Build and maintain analytic datasets and data pipelines

Design, implement, and document reproducible workflows for assembling largescale healthcare datasets used in realworld evidence and oncology research. Percentage time allocation: 30%

Develop statistical and computational code for analyses and modeling

Write efficient, wellstructured code to support effectiveness, costeffectiveness, and health services research, including model implementation and validation. Percentage time allocation: 25%

Perform data integration, cleaning, and transformation

Merge heterogeneous data sources (claims, EMR, registry, survey data), conduct quality checks, and prepare analysisready datasets. Percentage time allocation: 20%

Conduct descriptive and exploratory analyses

Generate summary statistics, visualizations, and preliminary findings to guide study design and analytic decisions. Percentage time allocation: 15%

Conduct literature reviews and support research synthesis

Review and summarize scientific literature related to cancer prevention and control, population health, social determinants of health, health disparities, and related topics. Percentage time allocation: 10%

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

A high school diploma and two years' work experience as a Statistical and Research Analyst I.. A bachelor's degree with mathematics and/or statistics courses may be substituted for the required work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree (minimum) in health informatics, data science, health services research, biostatistics, epidemiology, or a related quantitative field.

  • Demonstrated experience programming with SAS, SQL, Python, R, or Stata, including building and managing large analytic datasets.

  • Proven experience working with administrative claims data or other largescale healthcare datasets.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse research team.
