What is a data analyst non technical?

A Data Analyst (Non Technical) is a professional who works with data to help organizations make informed decisions, but focuses more on interpreting and presenting data rather than writing code or using advanced technical tools. They often use spreadsheets and basic data visualization software to analyze trends, prepare reports, and communicate findings to non-technical stakeholders. Their role is key in translating complex data into actionable insights that can be easily understood by decision-makers across the business.

How do data analyst non technical roles typically contribute to cross-departmental projects within an organization?

Data Analyst (Non-Technical) professionals often serve as a bridge between data teams and business units, helping translate data insights into actionable strategies for departments like marketing, sales, or operations. They work closely with stakeholders to understand their data needs, prepare reports, and communicate findings in accessible language. Collaboration is key, as they frequently participate in meetings, provide context for data trends, and ensure that different teams are aligned on objectives and outcomes. This role is ideal for those who enjoy teamwork, communication, and applying analytical thinking to solve business challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data analyst non technical, and why are they important?

To excel as a Data Analyst (Non-Technical), you need strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of data interpretation, usually supported by a bachelor's degree in a related field. Familiarity with Excel, basic data visualization tools, and reporting platforms is typically expected, though advanced programming is not required. Effective communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management are vital soft skills that help translate data insights into actionable business strategies. These abilities are crucial for ensuring data-driven decisions align with organizational goals and for communicating findings clearly to non-technical audiences.

  • Assist engineering and field teams with production analysis, troubleshooting, and performance reporting.
  • Work with operations personnel to validate production data and investigate discrepancies.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to production performance, reliability, and operational efficiency.

Data Management & Reporting

  • Collect, validate, organize, and maintain production and operational data from WellView, ProdView, SCADA, and other systems.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards and reports used to track production KPIs, equipment performance, downtime, and operational trends.
  • Perform routine data quality checks to ensure information is accurate, consistent, and complete.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly production reports for engineering, operations, and management.
  • Develop Excel-based tools, models, and reports using advanced formulas, pivot tables, and other analytical functions.

Systems & Data Visualization

  • Develop and maintain dashboards using Power BI, Spotfire, Tableau, or similar visualization platforms.
  • Improve the accessibility and usability of production and operational data for field and management teams.
  • Assist with the development and optimization of automated reporting processes.
  • Use SQL, Python, or similar tools for data extraction and analysis when applicable.
  • Identify opportunities to eliminate manual processes and improve the efficiency of data collection and reporting.

Regulatory & Compliance Support

  • Assist with the preparation and submission of required production and regulatory reports.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for audits, inspections, and internal reporting requirements.
  • Support compliance with applicable local, state, and federal oil and gas regulations.
  • Monitor production and operational information for potential reporting or compliance issues.

Collaboration & Process Improvement

  • Work closely with production engineers, field personnel, operations teams, and management to provide accurate and timely information.
  • Translate production data into practical recommendations that support operational decision-making.
  • Provide support and training related to production systems, dashboards, reporting tools, and data-entry procedures.
  • Recommend improvements to data collection, reporting, and operational workflows.
  • Support technology and digital transformation initiatives designed to improve production visibility and operational performance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Data Science, Business Analytics, Computer Science, or a related field preferred; equivalent technical or industry experience will also be considered.
  • 2–5 years of relevant experience, preferably within oil and gas, energy, production operations, or a related industrial environment.
  • Experience with WellView, ProdView, or similar oilfield production and operations software.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis.
  • Experience with Power BI, Spotfire, Tableau, or similar reporting and visualization tools.
  • Working knowledge of SCADA systems and production data preferred.
  • SQL, Python, scripting, or database experience is a plus.
  • Understanding of oilfield operations, production processes, equipment performance, and production metrics.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and environmental reporting requirements within the oil and gas industry is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, field personnel, management, and other stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.
