Data Analyst Computer Science information

Is 40 too late for data science?

Data analysts and data scientists can successfully transition into the field at age 40 or older, as skills in programming, statistics, and data visualization are valuable regardless of age. Many professionals acquire relevant certifications or learn tools like Python, R, or SQL later in their careers to enhance their prospects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Analyst in Computer Science, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Analyst in Computer Science, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistics, and a relevant degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools such as SQL, Python, R, and data visualization platforms like Tableau or Power BI, as well as experience with database systems, are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help data analysts translate complex data into actionable insights for stakeholders. These skills are crucial for accurately interpreting data trends, supporting business decisions, and driving organizational growth.

What is a Data Analyst in Computer Science?

A Data Analyst in Computer Science is a professional who collects, processes, and analyzes data to help organizations make informed decisions. They use various statistical tools and programming languages, such as Python, R, and SQL, to interpret complex datasets and identify trends or patterns. Their work often involves cleaning data, creating visualizations, and preparing reports for stakeholders. Data Analysts play a key role in turning raw data into actionable insights that drive business strategies.

How does a Data Analyst with a computer science background typically collaborate with other departments within a company?

Data Analysts with a computer science background often work closely with teams such as marketing, product development, and IT to translate raw data into actionable insights. They may participate in cross-functional meetings to understand business goals, provide data-driven recommendations, and help automate data collection processes. Strong communication skills are essential, as analysts must explain technical findings in a way that non-technical stakeholders can understand. This collaborative environment not only broadens their impact but also exposes them to various aspects of the business, fostering professional growth.

Can I be a data analyst with computer science?

Yes, a background in computer science provides a strong foundation for a data analyst role, as it covers programming, data structures, and algorithms. Data analysts often use tools like SQL, Excel, and statistical software, and having programming skills in languages such as Python or R is highly beneficial.

Is a data analyst a high salary?

Data analysts typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. In general, they have higher-than-average starting pay compared to many entry-level roles, especially when skilled in tools like Excel, SQL, and data visualization software. Advanced skills or certifications can lead to higher compensation.

Will AI replace a data analyst?

AI can automate routine data processing and basic analysis tasks, but data analysts are essential for interpreting complex data, making strategic decisions, and providing context. The role of a data analyst involves skills like critical thinking, domain knowledge, and communication, which are difficult for AI to fully replicate. Therefore, AI is more likely to augment rather than replace data analysts in the foreseeable future.

Description
VAST Data is looking for a Sr. Data Analyst Sales to join our growing team!
This is a great opportunity to be part of one of the fastest-growing infrastructure companies in history, an organization that is in the center of the hurricane being created by the revolution in artificial intelligence.
"VAST's data management vision is the future of the market." - Forbes
VAST Data is the data platform company for the AI era. We are building the enterprise software infrastructure to capture, catalog, refine, enrich, and protect massive datasets and make them available for real-time data analysis and AI training and inference. Designed from the ground up to make AI simple to deploy and manage, VAST takes the cost and complexity out of deploying enterprise and AI infrastructure across data center, edge, and cloud.
Our success has been built through intense innovation, a customer-first mentality and a team of fearless VASTronauts who leverage their skills & experiences to make real market impact. This is an opportunity to be a key contributor at a pivotal time in our company's growth and at a pivotal point in computing history.
Overview:
VAST is seeking a Sr. Data Analyst Sales to join our growing analytics team. The Sr. Data Analyst will provide strategic recommendations (not just data findings) that directly influence business decisions and company strategy. The role will be fully aligned with Sales and Revenue Operations (RevOps) to develop analytical solutions that improve reporting systems, data quality, and processes. This role will drive consistency across the sales org, not just produce reports. The Sr. Data Analyst will manage multiple stakeholders and present to Sales leadership at all levels of the organization.
With a focus on Sales analytics, the ideal candidate has a strong understanding of Sales processes, organizational structures, best practices, and strategies. This role requires a deep understanding of SFDC data schema (Accounts, Leads, Opportunities). The Sr. Data Analyst will build and maintain metrics used across a global sales organization to improve performance. Knowledge of sales and RevOps definitions (pipeline, commit, stage criteria, quote to cash steps, lead to order, sales ops metrics, etc.) is expected. The role will be responsible for building data models behind operational metrics, using SQL. The role will create visually compelling dashboards in Tableau that deliver timely insights that enable course correction, change behaviors, and improve outcomes.
As a Sr. Data Analyst, this position will play a key role in transforming data into actionable insights that improve business outcomes. The analyst is expected to deliver in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while also ensuring accuracy and reliability of analytics. The Sr. Data Analyst will lead large, complex analytics and reporting projects, delivering accurate, accessible, and repeatable business reporting linked to strategic business outcomes. We are seeking an analyst that can tell stories with data and deliver actionable recommendations that our stakeholders use to make change within their organizations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership: Translates high-level business problems and questions into specific, measurable analytics, metrics, and visualizations
  • Project Ownership: Leads analytical projects end-to-end with minimal supervision, including defining scope, methodology, execution, and delivery
  • Mentorship: Provide guidance and analytical support to junior analysts. Conduct peer review of code, analysis, and reports to ensure accuracy and quality
  • Data Extraction: Applies advanced SQL skills to extract and transform data, ensuring data integrity and accuracy for reporting and analysis purposes
  • Strategic Analysis: Design, implement, and maintain metrics, moving beyond basic reporting to establish predictive performance indicators
  • Data Visualization: Develop and maintain automated Tableau dashboards that provide real-time visibility into the health of Sales
  • Data Management: Ensure the accuracy of data through regular audits and process improvement efforts. Works to improve the integrity of our data
  • Stakeholder Management: Act as a primary liaison between the analytics team and business function. Ability to influence senior leaders and drive cross-functional alignment.

Requirements
  • Education: Masters degree in Business, Business Analytics, Computer Science, Data Science or a related field preferred
  • Experience: 5+ years as a data analyst with experience in sales analytics, commercial operations, FP&A, or business intelligence
  • Programming Languages: Proven expertise in advanced SQL for data extraction and manipulation required
  • Visualization Tools: Expert in Tableau for dashboard creation, data visualization, and data storytelling required
  • Analytical Skills: Proven analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Domain Expertise: Knowledge of SFDC data, schemas, and processes required. Knowledge of sales and RevOps metrics and definitions is expected
  • Travel: Minimal travel required (approximately 10% or less annually)

Qualifications
  • A relentless drive and a customer-first mentality are essential.
  • The ability to deliver quickly on requests, shortening development cycles and iterations
  • An attention to detail that ensures accuracy and reliability in findings that leads to trust and credibility with stakeholders.
  • The ability to break down complex problems, identify patterns, and derive meaningful insights from data.
  • Intellectual curiosity with a natural desire to explore data and ask questions that lead to deeper insights.
  • The ability to convey complex data insights clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with prioritizing tasks.
  • Ability to thrive in a culture of transparency and direct feedback.
