Delta Dental of Iowa invites applicants for a Data Analysis Intern for Summer 2027. In this role, you will gain comprehensive exposure to the underwriting and actuarial functions of our business. You will learn alongside a talented team that assesses risk, calculates premium pricing and ensures we remain competitive, profitable and financially stable. This is an opportunity to work on both production and project assignments and analyze data to support business units. You will develop approaches, use data query, calculation and reporting tools. You will learn how our Underwriting and Actuarial team uses data to improve the health and smiles of the people we serve.
We are excited to participate in the Insure Your Future program, an early-stage internship initiative, designed for freshman/sophomore students to explore the insurance industry. You will gain hands-on experience, learn from subject matter experts, and collaborate with cross functional teams. This is your chance to apply what you've learned in the classroom with meaningful work, network with fellow interns, and grow your data analytics career all while making a difference in our community.
This temporary, full-time internship will start on May 19, 2027, and work from our Johnston, Iowa location 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.
Learning Objectives:
  • Understand data structures and repositories.
  • Learn how to use various data query tools.
  • Manipulate large amounts of data to answer questions and prove/disprove hypotheses.
  • Create and present findings and results.
  • Learn underwriting skills and contribute to day-to-day operations.
  • Interact with cross functional teams and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Complete special projects on time with high quality.
  • Engage in programs and networking opportunities to strengthen business acumen in the insurance industry.
  • Support internship program by motivating and driving participation among intern peers to fully engage with opportunities available throughout the summer.
  • Represent Delta Dental of Iowa as well as the other Delta Dental companies in a professional manner both internally and externally.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Required
  1. Freshman or sophomore student working toward a Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Risk Management, Financial Reporting, Statistics, or related field.
  2. Minimum 3.0 GPA (verified through transcript).
  3. Current enrollment in a college or university.
  4. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and intermediate Excel experience.
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  6. Must be available to participate in Insure Your Future leadership development/networking opportunities.

Preferred
  1. Familiarity with PowerPoint, Python, and R.
