Job Description
The Board of Directors seeks a proven leader who is visible and active in the community, who will serve to inspire and lead volunteers and staff and be a solid operator and financial manager. If you would like the opportunity to truly make a positive difference in the community, here is your chance.
Owen County Family YMCA Facility Information
The main facility is 27,000 square feet. The main facility is well maintained with a regulation size basketball court, well equipped strength and cardio areas, walking track, group exercise room, 6 lane swimming pool with starting blocks, a heated therapy pool, dry sauna on the pool deck, locker rooms including a separate family locker room, community room, dance studio, a child watch area, and kitchen. Outside the facility are partially paved walking/running paths, playground areas, and a shelter house with picnic tables. An annex building is also on the property and offers many opportunities for rental income or program expansion.
Programs: Our offerings include swim lessons, water exercise, group fitness classes, child watch services, and pickleball, along with a variety of youth programs such as gymnastics, dance, soccer, and sports camps, as well as driver's education. The Y also hosts and partners on numerous community events, including a Halloween celebration, an annual fundraising event, health screenings (such as Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring), a wine run, school physical education classes, and more.
Financial: Based on the 2026 budget, our Y's total annual expenditures are projected to be approximately $1 million. Membership-related fees account for about 54% of our income, with program revenue contributing an additional 20% and donations and contributions representing 22%. We carry only a small equipment loan and have no other outstanding debt. The organization maintains several months of operating cash reserves, providing financial stability and flexibility. In addition, we benefit from generous endowments held at our community foundation that help support ongoing operations.
Our association has demonstrated resilience through a period of change and is poised to meet the evolving needs of our community in 2026 and beyond.

Qualifications
Minimum Criteria for Candidates:
1. Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
2. A minimum of five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with supervision of employees.
3. Must have the ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
4. Have the ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered or considered, for both economy and the effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the community.
5. Have an accredited 4 year college degree, and/or the equivalent work experience.
6. Have the YMCA Organizational Leader Certification or must obtain it within three years after starting CEO position.
7. Possess a fiscally sound business management approach.
Additional Preferred Criteria for Candidates:
1. Strategic planning and fundraising experience including annual campaigns and the securing of grants
2. A proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management
Essential Functions
Advocate the vision of the YMCA and be the heart and soul of the operation: Should actively interact and communicate with YMCA members, donors, and staff and volunteers and be seen as an active and integral member of the community. Act as an ambassador for the mission, cause, and vision for the YMCA within the community and be seen and respected as a leader, with the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, while always upholding the highest standards of the values of the YMCA's heritage.
Develop and Manage the Staff Team: Lead by example; remain actively engaged in staff development and performance leading to superior results in programs, member satisfaction and community engagement. Maintain a culture of integrity, high ethical standards, values, accountability and performance. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of inclusiveness, camaraderie, and mission.
Lead Fund Raising and Grant Efforts: Establish a plan for attaining the YMCA's annual fund-raising goals and take the campaign to new levels of engagement with members, volunteers and donors. Develop and implement fund-raising plans, which will establish this Y as a leading charitable organization within the community as well as meet the needs of this association. Lead and direct capital campaigns relative to expansion of facilities and programs as necessary. Research and apply for relevant grants to help expand or sustain the Y's programs.
Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: Have the ability to work effectively with volunteers and key staff to create and develop a strategic roadmap that addresses opportunities and challenges with defined organizational strategies. Lead staff in the development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. Lead volunteers in aligning committees and their work to support the strategies and goals of the association.
Prepare and Manage the Budget: Use high level of financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth, and stability while consistently leading the organization to balance or surplus operations by growing revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff leaders on successful financial operation of facilities.
Improve Operating Performance: Work with the board to develop an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives. Remain fully informed of all operational issues and have the ability to quickly address any issues that arise as well as forecast future needs.
Enhance Programming/Drive Membership: Successfully promote the YMCA's services and activities to the community, enhance and develop new programming making the YMCA the preferred provider within the community. Continue to engage, as well as retain, current members and cultivate new membership to the YMCA.
Diversity and Inclusion: In congruence with the YMCA's mission, we seek to foster an environment where diversity is celebrated and where all members, volunteers, and staff can reach their fullest potential. The new CEO must have the ability to work with people of diverse culture backgrounds in the YMCA--members, volunteers, donors, and co-workers.
Maintain a Culture: Continue to strengthen a culture of inclusion, integrity, character and life-long learning within the YMCA organization that reinforces, encourages, and promotes values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.
Continue to Develop an Effective and Diverse Volunteer Board: Work with the board to establish a process to recruit, train, develop, and renew the volunteers on the board. Guide the organization to research each key initiative, build agreement, and enlist support from each critical constituency and establish a timeline for completing each aspect of the planning process. Work with the board to establish an ongoing implementation plan for each major strategic initiative and a process to monitor results.
