What You'll Do
Perform complex plumbing and pipefitting repairs, alterations, renovations, and modernization projects throughout County facilities.
Independently assess projects by estimating labor, materials, tools, equipment, and time required to complete work efficiently.
Troubleshoot and resolve difficult maintenance issues, determining effective solutions while minimizing disruption to facility operations.
Recognize occupational hazards and consistently follow established safety procedures to maintain a safe work environment.
Assist supervisors with facility inspections to identify deficiencies, evaluate code compliance, and recommend appropriate repairs or corrective actions.
Provide technical expertise during emergency maintenance situations and recommend the most effective course of action.
Utilize Countywide and department-specific software to manage work assignments, document completed work, and support daily operations.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must possess a current Master or Journeyman plumber's license issued by the Michigan State Board of Plumbing or by a state approved agency.

Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license.

Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this classification.

Successfully complete the six month probationary period.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license.

Must maintain a current Master or Journeyman Plumber license or certificate, issued by the Michigan Department of Labor or a state approved agency.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Leads lower level maintenance employees. Checks work, trains, assists, and instructs employees.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Plans, installation by studying blueprints and work sketches to determine plumbing materials needed for the most economical job.

Reviews existing and proposed plumbing plans and details.

Coordinates with community representatives as required including plumbing permits.

Lays out, installs, inspects, and repairs complete plumbing systems, water mains, service lines, sewer lines, valves, gauges, pumps and fixtures as needed for County facility maintenance.

Cuts pipe, using threading machine, as required for assigned projects.

Joins piping by means of threaded, caulked, wiped, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints.

Cuts or bores through walls, ceilings or partitions as needed for the installation of plumbing.

Performs difficult plumbing/piping for the completion of repair, alteration, and modernization projects.

Reviews job orders and specifications to estimate the employee hours, materials, tools, and equipment necessary to complete maintenance projects.

Plans, coordinates, and reviews the work of lower-level maintenance employees engaged in plumbing projects.

Orders, stores and controls materials, tools, and equipment necessary to accomplish assigned craft projects.

Maintains records relative to materials and employee hours utilized on specific projects.

Advises and recommends to higher level maintenance personnel procedures required to correct difficult and/or emergency maintenance situations relative to a specific craft specialty.

Assists supervisor in the inspection of facilities to determine repairs necessary to buildings and equipment.

Reviews work under construction and upon completion to determine the effectiveness of work methods.

Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to operate a motor vehicle and/or be a passenger.

WORKING CONDITIONS

May perform duties in areas of extreme hot and cold temperatures, and exposure to smells, dust, gases, and vapors with limited ventilation.
