What is a CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) in the USA?

A CWI, or Certified Welding Inspector, in the USA is a professional certified by the American Welding Society (AWS) to inspect and ensure that welding work meets specified codes and standards. CWIs are responsible for checking weld quality, reviewing documentation, and verifying that welders and procedures comply with regulations. Their expertise is crucial in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and energy, where safety and quality are paramount. Becoming a CWI typically involves passing a rigorous exam and meeting education and experience requirements.

Certified Welding Inspectors (CWIs) in the USA often encounter challenges such as staying current with evolving welding codes and standards, managing tight inspection schedules, and ensuring clear communication between welders, engineers, and project managers. To manage these challenges, CWIs regularly participate in ongoing training, utilize digital documentation tools, and foster collaboration by holding clear, concise meetings. Being detail-oriented and adaptable is key to maintaining quality and safety, especially on large or fast-paced projects.
