What does a custom interior designer do?

A Custom Interior Designer specializes in creating personalized interior spaces tailored to the unique preferences, needs, and lifestyles of individual clients. They work closely with clients to understand their vision and requirements, then develop design concepts, select materials, and oversee the implementation of custom furnishings, color schemes, and layouts. Their role often involves collaborating with architects, contractors, and artisans to ensure every detail is executed according to the client's specifications. The goal is to transform residential or commercial spaces into functional, aesthetically pleasing environments that reflect the client's personality and practical needs.

What are the typical challenges faced by custom interior designers when managing client expectations?

Custom interior designers often encounter challenges in aligning their creative vision with clients’ preferences, budgets, and timelines. It’s common for clients to have evolving ideas or to request changes mid-project, which requires strong communication and adaptability. Managing expectations around material lead times, costs for bespoke elements, and the feasibility of certain design concepts is essential to maintain client satisfaction and project success. Building trust and setting clear milestones help navigate these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a custom interior designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Custom Interior Designer, you need a solid background in design principles, spatial planning, and color theory, often supported by a degree in interior design or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, or Revit, as well as knowledge of building codes and materials, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong client communication skills set standout designers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering personalized, functional, and aesthetically pleasing spaces that meet client expectations.

RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR DESIGNER

Moontower Design + Build | Austin, Texas | Full-Time | $75,000-$95,000

Design beautiful homes and see them built.

Moontower Design + Build is looking for an experienced Residential Interior Designer who can pair strong creative instincts with the rigor required to carry custom residential work from early concept through construction and installation.

At Moontower, interiors are not treated as a separate downstream service. You will work alongside architects, builders, estimators, purchasers, and project managers as part of an integrated design-build team.

The right person will care as much about collaboration, budgets, schedules, documentation, and buildability as they do about color, material, composition, and the client experience.

Reports to: Design Director

Focus: Custom residential design-build projects, interiors-only projects, and standalone interior design engagements

What You'll DoLead Residential Interiors
  • Lead interior design scopes from concept through construction and installation.
  • Develop design concepts, material palettes, finish selections, furnishings, and client presentations.
  • Create and maintain accurate finish schedules, specifications, samples, and FF&E documentation.
  • Guide clients through selections and design decisions while balancing design intent, budget, schedule, and constructability.
  • Lead client presentations and communicate recommendations clearly and confidently.
Keep Projects Moving
  • Own interior design deliverables, deadlines, and milestone presentations.
  • Coordinate closely with the Design Director, lead designers, estimating, purchasing, and project management.
  • Design within established project budgets and collaborate with estimating as selections and scope evolve.
  • Maintain organized project files, decisions, meeting notes, and follow-up items.
  • Identify missing information, unresolved selections, or schedule risks before they become urgent.
Bridge Design and Construction
  • Provide design oversight during construction through site meetings and milestone reviews.
  • Coordinate design details with field teams, vendors, craftspeople, architects, and consultants.
  • Apply practical knowledge of residential construction, building science, healthy materials, and relevant building codes.
  • Support procurement through quote review, purchasing schedules, order coordination, delivery, and installation.
Support the Growth of Moontower's Interiors Practice
  • Assist the Sales Director and Design Director with qualified interior design opportunities, including discovery conversations, site visits, scopes, proposals, and follow-up.
  • Keep interior design lead information and next steps organized in JobTread.
  • Help stage completed projects for professional photography, home tours, and other client-facing events.
  • Build strong working relationships with vendors, showrooms, artisans, architects, builders, realtors, and referral partners.
  • Help improve interior design workflows, templates, and standard operating procedures.
What Success Looks Like
  • Clients feel heard, guided, and confident in their decisions.
  • Design concepts are beautiful, practical, buildable, and well documented.
  • Selections, budgets, schedules, and project milestones stay aligned.
  • Construction teams receive the information they need before it becomes urgent.
  • You communicate early, take ownership, and contribute to stronger work across the entire team.
What You Bring
  • Professional experience delivering high-end residential interiors; custom residential design-build experience is especially valuable.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating refined design judgment, material fluency, and attention to detail.
  • Experience developing finish schedules, specifications, presentations, and construction-ready design documentation.
  • Confidence working directly with clients, consultants, vendors, craftspeople, and construction teams.
  • The ability to manage multiple projects, budgets, priorities, and deadlines without losing sight of design intent.
  • A practical understanding of how interior design decisions affect construction, procurement, schedule, and cost.
  • Strong organization, follow-through, communication, and personal accountability.
  • Comfort supporting sales conversations and representing Moontower professionally with prospective clients and industry partners.

Experience with tools such as Google Workspace, Archicad, Twinmotion, Enscape, Morpholio, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Studio Designer, Keynote, Programa, and JobTread is valuable. You do not need to know every platform, but you should be comfortable learning new tools quickly.

  • 10 days paid time off.
  • 11 paid company holidays.
  • Moontower pays 80% of the employee premium for company-sponsored health insurance.
  • Company-sponsored disability insurance.
  • Opt-in company phone plan.
  • Mileage reimbursement for personal vehicle use.
  • Professional licensing and continuing education support.
