What are some common challenges faced by professionals in custom home building, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in custom home building often encounter challenges such as managing client expectations, coordinating with multiple subcontractors, and adapting to unexpected changes in design or materials. Building strong relationships with clients and team members, staying organized with detailed timelines, and being adaptable to changes can help ensure a smoother process and successful project outcomes.

What does a custom home builder do?

A custom home builder is responsible for designing and constructing homes tailored to the specific needs and preferences of the client. They work closely with homeowners to create unique floor plans, select materials, and oversee every aspect of the building process, from initial planning to final inspection. Custom home builders coordinate with architects, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure the finished home meets the client's expectations in terms of quality, functionality, and style. Their role includes managing timelines, budgets, and compliance with local building codes.

Is it hard to become a custom home builder?

Becoming a custom home builder requires gaining experience in construction, often through apprenticeships or working in related trades, and obtaining relevant licenses or certifications. It involves developing skills in project management, design, and craftsmanship, and can take several years to master before managing complex projects independently.

These combined capabilities ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the client's specifications.

Build Amazing Homes. Build an Amazing Career.

Skycrest Homes is one of the fastest-growing luxury custom home builders and remodelers in Chicago's Northwest Suburbs. We specialize in high-end custom homes, additions, and major renovations where attention to detail, exceptional client experiences, and flawless execution matter.

We're looking for someone who loves bringing order to chaos, thrives on organization, and takes pride in making sure nothing falls through the cracks.

If you're energized by solving problems, keeping projects moving, and being the operational backbone of a growing company, this could be the perfect opportunity.

What You'll Do

You'll oversee the behind-the-scenes operations that keep our projects running smoothly from contract through construction.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating homeowner selections and documenting all decisions
  • Preparing detailed construction proposals and contracts
  • Managing subcontractor agreements, certificates of insurance, and licensing
  • Tracking vendor compliance and insurance renewals
  • Creating and issuing purchase orders
  • Preparing permit submittals and coordinating with municipalities
  • Managing project documentation and digital files
  • Assisting with budgeting, bidding, and estimating
  • Coordinating material orders and vendor communications
  • Tracking project schedules, deadlines, and critical milestones
  • Working closely with project managers, vendors, architects, and homeowners
  • Improving systems and processes as the company continues to grow
  • Identifying issues before they become problems

Who We're Looking For

This position is NOT for someone looking for a slow-paced administrative job.

We're looking for someone who:

✔ Loves checklists and organization

✔ Enjoys solving problems

✔ Has incredible attention to detail

✔ Can juggle multiple priorities without feeling overwhelmed

✔ Communicates professionally with clients and vendors

✔ Takes ownership instead of waiting for direction

✔ Learns quickly and enjoys improving systems

✔ Has a positive, can-do attitude

✔ Is dependable, proactive, and highly organized

Experience We'd Love

Experience in one or more of these areas is highly preferred:

  • Residential construction
  • Custom home building
  • Remodeling
  • Project coordination
  • Estimating
  • Purchasing
  • Construction administration
  • Buildertrend, JobTread, CoConstruct, Procore, or similar software
  • Microsoft Office and Google Workspace

Construction experience is strongly preferred, but we're willing to train the right highly motivated person with outstanding organizational skills.

Why You'll Love Working Here

At Skycrest Homes, you'll become an important part of a growing company—not just another employee.

We offer:

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Performance bonuses
  • Paid vacation and holidays
  • Health insurance contribution
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Modern technology and systems
  • A collaborative, supportive team environment
  • Opportunity for advancement as the company grows
  • The chance to help build some of the most beautiful homes in the Chicago area
